Starting Xyrem - Question for anyone who is on it

Posted by EastC on September 10, 2010, at 12:02:59

So my neurologist finally sent in a prescription for Xyrem for my treatment resistant chronic insomnia that I have been dealing with for the past 10 years. I was excited about it until I started doing additional research and found out about its high incidence of worsening of depression. I am currently treated for clinical depression/mood-disorder and am on Lexapro and Strattera in the morning and then Neurontin, Seroquel and Xanax in the evening. Is there anyone else out there who is being treated for depression and also on Xyrem at the same time with no problems? I would really like to know as a lot of the anecdotal reports seem to indicate that if you already have depression, then it is almost *guaranteed* to worsen it.

Claude Rifat claimed it is the best antidepressant one could think of. We can't believe all we hear. It may cause rebound depression. Being on it 24/7 may eliminate that.

Unfortunately I will only be able to take it at night so the rebound depression is what I am worried about. There are just so many reports of worsening depression that I started to feel a little hopeless - and I haven't even started it yet! I am wondering if the Xanax XR that I take 3 times a day will counter some of that (as well as the Seroquel).

Sorry to interrupt but seriously I've read quite bit on xyrem on nursing newsletters I get it seems very promising. I've always found the regular greenstone brand generic is the best xanax if this helps. Tried long acting and didn't do well on it. Phillipa

Yeah, I would just take it and find out. I have heard reports of it being an antidepressant.

I have been taking it for a couple weeks and have not experienced any depressive symptoms. This is in contrast to some other meds, like klonopin, which make me depressed. However keep in mind I have not been diagnosed with depression. I also take lexapro, but for anxiety.

Yes Klonopin depressed me also - as well as every other benzo *except* Xanax which I am thankfully able to tolerate. I also take Lexapro (for depression in my case). And Linkadge you are correct that Xyrem is known for its antidepressant effect but it is very brief since the half-life is so short. The depression is known to be a rebound effect lasting the entire day following Xyrem administration. We'll see what happens but I am staying realistic about this after all of the medical literature along with anecdotal reports I have read.
