Has anyone tried Silenor or Lunesta for insomnia?

Posted by Zandy on August 26, 2010, at 15:21:17

If anyone has tried Silenor (Doxepin) or Lunesta for insomnia please let me know the good and the bad of your experience. I am desperate to get off benzos but need a good sleep med.

Thanks!

I like lunesta well enough. Haven't tried silenor. Prefer Sonata (I forget the generic name.) because it's quick onset and lack of hangover for me.

I've taken lunesta and was also taking benzos with it. I feel it's a lot weaker than benzos. No withdrawal when went off it as was expensive and didn't solve my problem as at the time severe insomnia which is resolving. Good luck with your choice. Phillipa

I have tried zopiclone (not eszopiclone ie lunesta) and doxapin. Silenor is simply low dose doxapin (I think it is 3 and 6mg tablets)?

Both are very effective for sleep, however I would personally prefer the zopiclone.

I can't really articulate why, I think the doxapin (I took 5mg) made me a little lazy the next day, wheras zopiclone was more transparent to mood and energy.

I only used sleep meds when I really needed them badly. I tried a lot of different ones.

My favorites were:

Lunesta (worked decent with only slight impact the next day, usually gone mid morning)

Ultra low dose Remeron (1mg to 7mg much more sedating than other common doses), and less carryover through the next day. Requires a sharp razor blade to cut pills into tiny chunks.

Silenor is not yet available but it looks like it has some potential. Should be available by the end of the month.

Lunesta makes me feel euphoric just like a benzo. If i take one at bedtime I'll be up half the night. But there have been times when it did help me sleep. Doxepin was sold as "Sinequan" here in the USA at a time when there was only Valium or tricyclics. It was the only thing I could get for anxiety back in the 70's. I hated it. It seemed to exacerbate my social anxiety.
