Stimulants to help sexual dysfunction?

Posted by jerryTRD on July 29, 2010, at 15:57:49

I have a total loss of libido and sexual functioning most likely due to Geodon (which I just tapered off of) and my doc put me back on Adderall and said since it effects dopamine that it would help bring back my functioning and desire.

Any truth to this?

stimulants are considered pro-sexual b/c of their effects on dopamine. I would think (but I'm not an MD, so I don't know for sure) that as the Geodon leaves your system, you'll have fewer sexual problems. Geodon apparently can elevate prolactin levels. When I googled it, it seemed that the manufacturer's claim is/was that the increase tends to be transient and of no real significance; there are, however, numerous case studies that would seem to indicate that, for at least some people, this prolactin elevation can be significant enough to cause side-effects. If I remember correctly, elevated prolactin levels have libido-dampening effects and can negatively affect reproductive health. Abilify doesn't seem to raise prolactin levels very often at all; apparently patients switched over to abilify usually see a decrese in prolactin levels, which might be one reason why Abilify doesn't have the same side-effects as meds that simply block D2, w/o any partial agonism.

Anyway, I hope the Adderall helps. Are you going to take another neuroleptic?

It's not exactly evidence-based. Occasionally, amphetamines have been reported to cause sexual dysfunction in their own right. On the other hand, other people report increased libido.
