Modafinil: 'feeling sleep deprived', anxiety

Posted by vic80 on July 15, 2010, at 17:08:18

Dx: MDD, OCD(mainly O)
Rx: Milnacipran, Modafinil, Lorazepam

After 8 weeks of upping and downing and changing Milnacipran doc and i have decided to keep me at 25 mg once daily.

MODAFINIL, which i started today has had some strange effects on me. First one is a general feeling of being sleep deprived, even tho i had slept better than most days. Eyes are fixed gaze without blinking, noticed several times. Dry mouth and eyes. Sudden feelings of freshness, interperssed with bouts of drowsiness... Exacerbation of obsessions. Spent the whole day obsessing over my own thoughts and emotions.
Strange feeling of being disconnected and in a haze.
Felt a strange sense of pensiveness, bordering on anxiety without panic.
Mood elevation, which lasted like a few blips,.. But put me at unease.. Felt disconnected with my own emotions.. Perhaps the over obsession,
Heightened focus, extra sensitive to sounds, irritable.
An overall feeling of being in chronic sleep deprivation. What is ofgreat concern to me is emergence of a sort of DPDR like feeling. Which came and stayed due to rem sleep mess created by Lexapro.
My doc took me off Lorazepam and wants to keep it as emergency for panic.
I dont think i can manage the sort of over wired feeling i have felt combined with anxiety

This new form of tense jittery anxiety makes me feel emotionally numbed... And tends to make me have a barrage of old demons from the past haunt me.. Mainly a dissociation like feeling.. A certain incongruence between what i am saying or doing and what i am feeling. Probably too minutely noticing obsessively every action thought and mood of mine.
The only way i could feel a little better was taking the 0.5 mg Ativan,.. Which was followed with a slap happy feeling.. Lasted for a few minutes and culminating in feeling antagonistic and irritable.

I have no previous use of stimulants. After developing anxiety several months ago i even refrain from coffee.
What should i do i wonder.. Go through a few more days of Modafinil to let it reach steady state or just dump it outright.. The anxiety could throw me down the hole again.
Pdocs appt is after 2 weeks.
I guess everything of anxiety had been taken care of by 50 mg Milnacipran, but it had made me hard hearted, dysphoric, apathetic zombie like and Melancholic.

What could in wrong with that combo? I could live again if only i could manage to couple the anxiolytic calming effects of Ativan with the mood and drive elevation of Modafinil..
Any ideas?

How much modafinil are you taking?

How long were you on your benzo and what kind of taper did you do to come off it?

I'm just wondering if you're going through a bit of benzo withdrawal or adjustment to having had to go up and down with the Milnacipran, instead of side effects of the modafinil.

I take modafinil three or four times a week. For me, it's a very subtle med. It gives me a bit of a boost with focus and motivation, without feeling medicated.

I hope you feel better soon.

I don't get the taking of a stimulant like med if you have anxiety. Sounds like you were doing better before the addditon of modfinil? Phillipa

Hi vic80,

I can't think of a worse med than Modafinil for a person suffering from anxiety and OCD. I've tried it, I personally couldn't stand it, but I know some people like it. It sounds like you had a similar reaction to mine. I couldn't wait for it to wear off.

Is there a reason you can't add the benzo to the Milnacipran?

Good luck whatever you decide,

~Jade
