Higher dose effexor improve sexual dysfunction?

Posted by bearfan on July 12, 2010, at 16:33:15

I've only taken Effexor 37.5 or 75mg daily for about a month and had significant sexual dysfunction (inorgasmia, low libido, arousal issues). I've heard when the dosage increase to higher levels (150mg and above) it starts becoming and SNRI which may off-set the sexual dysfunction. Is this indeed true, or just make things worse? I also have anxiety so don't the dosage increase to aggravate that.

Unfortunately, it's not true.

it's true venlafaxine becomes more noradrenergic at higher doses, and even slightly dopaminergic at high or very high doses..
I haven't heard of side effect reversal such as with mirtazapine between 15mg and 30-45mg, though..
sorry!

the side effects could still go away on their own, so don't give up hope..

It is true. The problem is, NE reuptake inhibition does not reverse serotonergic side effects eg. inhibition of orgasm. It does, however, cause additional side effects such as increased heart rate.

Someone said when SE:NE are equally balanced, the sexual side effects cancel each other out. So is this not the case?

Not really. Effexor is a potent serotonin reuptake inhibitor at clinical doses and the side effects of SRIs cannot be cancelled out by NE, it just doesn't work like that.

Have you thought about trying Pristiq? I was on Effexor for years (150mg) and the sexual dysfunction never went away, but on Pristiq it went away (not completely but a lot) after a few months.

Kimbersaur, are you male or female? Also when did you think Pristiq 'kick in' (weeks). Was Pristiq as effective as regards to anxiety?
