Risperdal Consta

Posted by capricorn on June 30, 2010, at 19:50:55

For what reasons other than bipolar/schizoaffective/and schizophrenia would someone be put on Risperdal Consta?.

Is it sometimes used to treat personality disorder or some of it's symptoms?

I would think most shrinks would only use it for psychotic disorders or bipolar disorder. Personality disorders can sometimes be treated with neuroleptics, but I would think they'd want to use the pills, especially since some disorders (like borderline) involve only occasional use of neuroleptics, not daily use. Also, the consta is more expensive than generic risperdal.

That said, I've read that in the UK and Europe they make greater use of depot meds; they even use the low-dose flupenthixol depot for depression treatment. Here in the US, a lot of people don't even consider depot unless there's an outpatient commitment or threat of hospitalization.

I am asking because i currently have a diagnosis of personality disorder NOS. I was on a low dose of Zyprexa (5mgs) prior to that but was not taking it regularly.
This was due to a long term problem with remembering to take daily doses rather than deliberate non compliance.

I live in the UK and prior to the PD dx i had a 30 year history of being diagnosed with schizophrenia and then with schizoaffective disorder.
According to my pdoc i experience psychotic symptoms. Sometimes i can accept this(especially when stressed) but at other times i think 'What psychotic symptoms?!'

I always thought there would be quite strict criteria for putting people on Consta given that,as you say,it is more expensive than generic risperdal.

Hey. I don't know how the British system works with mental health. I've read that they have something called "sectioning" where they can have you locked up against your will for however long it takes to get you less crazy. I also read they may be making it easier to perform new kinds of brain operations on mentally ill people w/o their consent. Kind of scary.

Are you on the injections now? Why does your doc say you have psychotic symptoms?

Contrary to antipsychiatry hype people are not locked up willy nilly with gay abandon. You have to be seen as being a danger to yourself or others before sectioning comes into play.

Haven't read that. Do you have a reputable source
for that? If true it would certainly be scary.

Yes i am still on the injections.I think my doc says i have psychotic symptoms because i experience paranoia and my thinking can be irrational/weird especially when stressed.
