Hey there,

Lotazepam (Ativan) is not really a "hypnotic" benzo, though enough of it CAN knock you on your *ss!

Most of the hypnotic benzos have been replaced by the "z-drugs" (pyrrolones) such as Ambien, Sonata, and Lunesta. Not that they are any better than benzos! They are just as addictive, even more so in some cases, and they tend to act as "retrograde amnesiacs"--meaning that you can go and do a whole bad shitload of stuff w/o realizing it at the time when on them. Trust me!!! You'll wonder what the hell happened in the morning!

The only "true" benzo hypnotic was/is Halcion. Don't know if its still made, though I think it is (Roche). It came in .125mg and .250mg strengths which means that it was STRONG! I believe that it is a triazolobenzo like lorazepam, alprazolam, and clonazepam. It's the stuff that made president Bush I toss his cookies onto the Japanese Prime Minister! A rare side effect to be sure but I rejoiced when it happened to that evil man.

The next best thing as a hypnotic benzo is most likely flurazepam (Dalmane) as its close cousin flunetrazepam (Rohypnol) is not really available anymore. Dalmane will put you out in moments and let you sleep for a nice 8 hours with no hangover.

The next best in the US is a far-away third--temazepam (Tranxene). I find this stuff to be nearly useless, although the UK makes a gelcap of temazepam (jellies) to help with methadone withdrawal. THERE its supposedly pretty strong.

My advice in a nutshell--stay away from z-drugs, see if you can get Halcion, if you CAN seriously take it RIGHT before bed. It hits hard and very fast. If not, Dalmane 50mg is enough to put a person coked-up out of their head to sleep in about 35 minutes. It shouldn't be hard to get--I worked in the pharmacy of a "home for the aged" and nearly EVERY ONE of those people was given a Dalmane at night to shut 'em down for 8 hours!

The only other hypnotics that are non-benzo that you MAY be able to get are Xyrem (GHB--for $1000 for a tiny bottle), Placidyl (ethchlorovinyl alcohol), Chloral Hydrate (if still made, if not its easy to make yourself with bleach and acetone)...but that's about it. Oh yeah, since Soma is simply a prodrug for meprobamate (Miltown) it will knock you out also--for four hours or so. And then you must beware that you don't go and talk to mom and dad like SWIM did once! They thought he was about to OD and SWIM couldn't remember for the life of him what happened the next day! Be careful with Soma...they're safe but you don't want to hit the ground on your back where you could pull a Hendrix and choke on your own puke, you know?

Good luck!

Yes they still make Halcion, it comes in an injectable, I was given it in the hospital after a bout with a mixed state w/ psychosis.

Congrats on the job, I have a high tolerance to benzos, I found I had to use a high dose of Ativan for relief of anxiety though, 5mg. Because it's so short acting like Xanax, I found Xanax worked better and I didn't have to take as much. 1-2mg instead and they are relatively equal in does strength. Xanax is also the only benzo that has antidepressant/mood elevating properties for me, Ativan didn't and once I found a dose that worked for me. It did make me a little dumb.

You also have the option of long acting benzo's like valium and clonazepam which you can take once a day. Pop one at night and you're covered all the next day unless you need something to ware off quickly. Picking the right benzo can take time.

As an above poster mentioned above long acting hypnotics also keep you covered for anxiety the next day too. I found nitrazepam the best for that.

Sorry about the confusion, i found the hypnotic effect a negative. If i can get myself to lie in bed and turn off the reading light, i sleep like a rock.
