follow up after needing advice...

Posted by mommyron on June 7, 2010, at 18:49:43

I saw my doc and he put me on Parnate. 10 mg. I start tomorrow. I have all kinds of reservations about it--worried I won't sleep, I'll get fat, have anxiety, how will I manage the dietary restrictions. But I'm also too depressed to be much good these days, too much crying...thank you to the kind souls who lent their ears and advice.
Warmly,
Teresa

I have been on parnate, 40mg, for a year. It killed my severe depression within days. I did have insomnia at the beginning, very bad insomnia, but my doctor prescribed perphenizine then seroquel and that took care of it.

The diet is really no big deal. No cheese (mozzeralla is okay, so you can eat pizza). No salami or pepperoni. No soy sauce or tofu. These weren't exactly staples of my diet, so it hasn't been a big deal to lose them.

Good luck.

Hi Teresa,
I feel your pain. Hard to be mommy when feeling like that. I was on Parnate for over a year, I think I started at 30mg though. The first week I felt GREAT. Just like with Emsam. I think I read you tried that. Anyway, a good sign if you have initial response. For me that faded and I had to wait out some unpleasant but tolerable side effects. The food was no problem, never had a reaction. Watch other meds though. Sleep was an issue and, surprizingly, very low blood pressure. That was a real problem for me. I wouldn't worry about weight gain on Parnate. You'll probably lose some.

After the initial boost, it took a while to kick in *for me*. Sometimes high doses are used/needed (60mg+) and/or augments. Just be really careful if that happens. Good luck!
