Hello Manic,

I think you should ask for some sertraline 50mg tablets to take instead of citalopram. You can then adjust the dose either to 50mg/day or 100mg/day depending on what suits you best.

It's often difficult to know whether or not SSRIs are contributing to weight gain because the weight gain is usually quite gradual. Some meds (such as Zyprexa) can cause weight gain so quickly that the cause it obvious. Since you're already doing plenty of exercise, perhaps it would help to make some changes to your diet. Your doctor will probably make some suggestions. Regular portions of oily fish such as salmon and mackerel are good for the heart, for depression and for arthritis.

Glucosamine sulphate 1500mg per day is sometimes helpful for arthritis of the knees. You can take it as a single daily dose for convenience. There are some inexpensive brands available as most pharmacies and supermarkets. The dose should be 1500mg per day for arthritis, lower doses are only suitable for people who do not already have arthritis.

Cortisone/steroid injections can help the pain but it's not a good idea to have too many because there's a risk of damaging the joint.

Have you tried the usual anti-inflammatory drugs such as diclofenac and naproxen? Diclofenac is more effective than paracetamol but it's also more likely to cause side effects.

Diclofenac gel (Voltarol Emulgel) is sometimes useful for knee pain. It doesn't normally cause any side effects, unlike the tablets. You can use it three times a day.

i think i told you about the zacin cream i got from the gp//he said it will sting a little do to chillies in the cream///i tried it a found it no good at all //an it didnt sting //but when i went in the bath an the water activated something my knees were on fire//.i find ibrufrin tabs are the best but you need a wheel barrow full to feel affect. an you no the score on ripping your gut,s out.//i no the cortisone only mask the injury but the were cool for tennis elbow through bricklaying // but as you say they only let you have so many an zip them///i had chinese acupunture after that an it was great //but they only work if you stop the thing that cause,s the pain so really you waste you money//i mean you have to walk ,or lay bricks to live in the days before i stopped work //since i dont lay bricks now my elbows are fine

Manic have you considered knee replacement surgery it's very popular here? Phillipa my next door neighbor will soon have to get it as she's had the limit of steroid injections and is 56. Phillipa

>Zacin cream

I think you would find that Voltarol Emulgel is more effective. Also, it won't set your knees on fire :) It's definitely a lot more popular than Zacin.

>I find ibuprofen tabs are the best

Prescription anti-inflammtory meds such as diclofenac or naproxen can be more effective for arthritis than ibuprofen because they have a stronger anti-inflammatory effect. Most people take them in combination with omeprazole or lansoprazole, which protect the stomach. Celecoxib (Celebrex) is a newer anti-inflammatory drug which is less irritant to the stomach.

All anti-inflammatory tablets are more likely to cause side effects than Voltarol Emulgel, so you should probably try that first. You can buy it from a pharmacy but it's a small tube and it's quite expensive. If it works, you could then ask your GP for the large tube on prescription. Just a thought.
