Which Med Could possibly be causing Tinnitus?

Posted by JayBTV2 on April 29, 2010, at 21:10:38

Hello,

This past Saturday I started getting a ringing in my left ear (tinnitus). I currently take:

Seroquel 100mg
Lamictal 150mg
Lithium 600mg
Marplan 25mg
Fish Oil (MorEPA)
Magnesium (500mg)

The most recent change was the addition of Marplan which was 2 months ago. I've been as high as 30mg but at least 20mg for 5 to 6 weeks.

I guess due to it's recent addition Marplan has the highest potential for being the cause. If it is I'm really torn because it's worked very well for my depression, motivation, and overall sense of wellbeing.

I saw my doctor yesterday and told him and he kinda blew it off as if it was no big deal. But I've searched a bit and some of the things I find are kinda disturbing. IE: that it'll be permanent.....

If anyone has any info or suggestions I'd appreciate it. For the time being I'm going to tolerate it as my doctor said to give it some time. It doesn't really bother me at the moment...

Is it a buzzing in your ears? Probably right about the new addition hopefully it will go away. Phillipa

Be careful. I have permanent tinnitus from long-term wellbutrin use. I thought it was worth enduring at the time (felt like I was at the end of my rope in terms of AD choices), but I now regret ever taking it. I've been off it for over a year and the chirping persists. (I also have hearing loss in that ear.) This is something I'll probably have to live with for the rest of my life. I don't know whether marplan is ototoxic or not, but it does seem to be the likeliest candidate. If you happen to notice a change in volume after you take a dose, or after you increase or decrease the dose, that could help verify that it's the one causing the problem.

Jay

I've heard tinnitus can be linked to TMJ.

I don't know which drug. I had it during a Serzone trial and it went away when I stopped the med.

Thanks to everyone who replied!

The TMJ suggestion is interesting. I do have an obvious click on the right side of my jaw when eating. That started maybe 4 months ago - it was really annoying at first but I've learned to ignore it. My mother also has TMJ. So I guess that is a possibility.

Even still I'm worried that time is of the essence as it seems to be getting worse. I went to my GP yesterday and had an ear irrigation which released a lot of wax. That didn't help though - this morning it's as loud as it's been and even seems to be a bit deafening.

So as risky as it is I think I'm going to stop Marplan immediately (I'm only taking 25mg - the starting dose is 20mg) and cut my lamictal down. I know it's going to be a rough ride but if this is med related and hearing in my left ear is at stake I'm not going to risk it. Perhaps I'll get in w/ my pDoc this week and switch to Emsam. I've taken that before w/ ok results....

There is a TMJ/TMD dentist in my area so I'll try to get in w/ him ASAP. If he can determine that TMJ/TMD is most likely the cause then I'll go back to my med combo.....

Just really scared so I'll take the withdrawl risk....

Just curious, why are you taking seroquel? Its a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor along with being an antipsychotic. Taking it along with marplan might be increasing norepinephrine too much. Sometimes that can raise blood pressure and cause tinnitus. I'd check my blood pressure if i were in your shoes.

My doctor took my BP 3 days ago when I saw him. It was 115/60 - which is ok. Perhaps it goes up when I take seroquel (at night for sleep).....I'll keep that in mind.

I'm also trying to get in to see a dentist on Monday to see if my Wisdom teeth (or TMJ) could potentially be the cause. They've told me numerous times that I should have my wisdom teeth pulled but I still have them (32 yrs old). I've read that's a very rare cause of tinnitus but still worth taking an X-Ray for....

Ugh....
