Lamictal Sores

Posted by Purple40 on April 29, 2010, at 13:54:40

Hello! I am new to posting but have been reading postings for awhile. I have so many questions about different meds and since no one seems to understand what I go through, I thought this would be the perfect place to finally find some understanding among people that are going through the same things. Hope that made sense. Here's my first question.... I have recently been put on Lamictal for mood swings and when I started taking 200mg, I started getting red sores on my face, like red, bloody sores that would have skin peeling from them. I told the doctor but she said Lamical can cause a rash but this sounded more like a dermatologist issue. The sores did not go away and bacame so bad that I didn't want to leave the house or wear makeup. When I weaned down to 50mg, the sores started to disappear. My doctor is still adament about Lamictal not causing these sores but I say it did. Has anyone else experienced this or heard of this? Thank you for your input!

I have met and read about people with the very same symptoms from lamictal and other AP's. It's the drug no doubt about it.

Thank you. My doctor was adamant that what I was describing was a dermotologist issue and I kept telling her that I had never had these sores until I started taking Lamictal. Anyway, now I know not to take 200mg. I would be curious to know why it causes these awful sores. Does anyone know?

Welcome to babble. But lamictal now can cause a rare rash called Steven Johnsons Syndrome. Not saying you have it but a google search might be worthwhile . Since can't see the sores no idea how bad or what your rash looks like. Phillipa

A dangerous rash is one of the main but rare side effects of lamictal. I'm surprised your pdoc didn't know this. You should stop the lamictal immediately.

When I increase my Lamictal I break out with a lot of acne. It eventually goes away.

Yes, Lamictal can cause a deadly rash, which the prescribing info says you should stop it imediatly. Google: Lamictal prescribing information. You should get something like Lamictal.com. I've taken Lamictal and read about it. I didn't get the rash, but stoped it because it was making me stupid.

Hello Phillipa,
I have read so many of your postings and so when I saw that you responded to mine I was very excited. I did read about the 'rash' but is this 'rash' the same thing as the 'sores' that I am referring to? As I mentioned, my Neurologist didn't seem concerned. The sores were horrible! When I washed my face, they bled again and would not heal. It took about 2 weeks for them to start to go away. Like I said, since the doctor kept saying it wasn't the Lamitcal causing the sores, I wanted to check with other people and now I know that I probably had that 'rash'. Not sure why it is referred to as a life threatening rash. Still taking the Lamictal but low dose and face looks clear again.

Hello Zyprexa,
Can I ask what you mean by making you stupid? Maybe it's doing it to me too and I don't even know it!

Is your acne like acne or like bloody sores? Is this something you never had prior to taking the Lamictal? I wonder how this med can cause the side effect of skin problems such as this. I've never experienced anything like this with any other meds and believe me, I've been on them all!

It sounds to me like you need to have a dermatologist look at the sores.

When I took it I would sort of be walking around and not as aware of surroundings and bump my head into things.

I too did better at lower doses. I took 100mg for a while but think I did best at 50mg, split into twice a day. I didn't take it for long. Its been a while since I took it so don't remember much about it.

I'm not feeling much better but I don't like to admit that to people. I've always been taught to smile, never complain, always say you are fine, feel great, etc., well I don't! Maybe I can summarize my situation for you sometime. You sound so knowledgeable. Are you a doctor?

But were the red, bloody sores a 'rash'? Evidently, this doctor has not heard this from any of her other patients. Once I lowered the dosage, the sores went away but it took about 2 weeks for them to go away even though I had lowered the dosage. Very weird. What causes the sores to develop? Anyone know? How does this med cause this side effect? Very curious.

I would not trust the opinion of your doctor. You may want to stay on 50 mg if it helps at all and start a low dose of lithium, maybe 300 mg lithobid.

Lamictal can cause all sorts of weird side effects that are not listed as common side effects.

Maybe you should just get off it completely and find another treatment.

Phillipa is not a doctor, none of us are as far as I know.

You may also want to consider finding a new psychiatrist.

Purple Morganator is right I'm not a doc. Used to be an RN but that was even before lamictal came out. I agree with Morgan also. As for describing the situation you can post it here for better feedback and many don't use this board daily. How's that sound? Phillipa

It is acne, which I have even though i'm a 30-something. But it gets like 3-5 times worse. When I did web searching at the time I didn't find much. And then later I found that it has happened with other people.

But it is weird that Lamictal affects the skin. The rash, acne, and your sores. Hmmm...

When I first tried Lamictal I gave up because of the acne. For me, I'm glad I gave it another shot. I don't know that it helps my mood, but I'm pretty sure that it doesn't make my other meds swing me around.

During my last increase I went up extremely slow and didn't seem to have the usual probs.

My doctor put me on a med once. And every time I took it I would get bloody stooles. If I took a half a pill that day the blood would be less. Soon as I stoped it the blood went away. I told the doctor about it and she said its not possible. She was addiment that this was not from the med, but reluctanly took me off it anyways. I'm glad I don't take it anymore. I did some reseach on that type of meds and found one I wanted to try. A different doctor prescribed it for me and I had great results. Just saying its good to be proactive about your meds!
