Anyone feel MORE depressed on Provigil

Posted by inanimate peanut on April 21, 2010, at 12:31:39

Has anyone tried Provigil and felt MORE depressed? I was feeling pretty good Saturday and started it then. I still felt pretty good Sunday and ok Monday. Tuesday I felt depressed and today it's like I'm off my meds I'm so depressed. I know it seems counter-intuitive, but has anyone ever heard of this happening?

Hey, I have been taking adrafinil, which after one hour turns into provigil in the body. I think I've been taking it for about 5 days and I've been feeling down and irritable. I am wondering if adrafinil has anything to do with it?

Yup. That drug is like poison to me.

Not only did it exacerbate my depression while taking it, but the worsened state lasted for over a weeks after discontinuation.

I took Provigil very briefly. It did nothing good for me. I actually felt stupid on it and didn't function well.

Yes, it made me very very depressed. Much worse than before I took it. Another one that did that to me was wellbutrin.

I use Provigil -- originally a narcolepsy drug -- to combat the lethargy associated with severe ADHD. If I don't take the morning dose, I fall asleep again. If I don't take the lunchtime dose, I get very listless, and then irked by my lack of activity.

Hello Brampton!

Welcome to Psycho-Babble! Thanks for sharing your experiences. I never knew some people get lethargy with ADHD. That's very interesting.

Thanks for the answers. At least I don't feel like I'm totally abnormal for thinking that it makes me more depressed. I can't tell what it does now. Some days are ok and some days I am more depressed. One thing that seems sure is that it doesn't seem to help, so I might as well not take it.

peanut, I'm joining the crowd here. Provigil induced dysphoria. I gave it a decent run because I wanted to dump the dex. But I had to admit it was AWFUL for me. Atypical response. Go figure.

Sorry sweetie--and good to bump into you again!

I've heard of it, though it hasn't been my experience. Provigil was a pretty good antidepressant augmentation and it seems to act that way for many people.
But, its mechanisms of action are bizarrely complicated - basically it turns out to affect just about every neurotransmitter to at least some minor degree.

My wild guess is that for people with dopamine-based depression (which I strongly suspect is me) it will generally do more good than harm.

Then again, the broad pharmacodynamics of modafinil means it's probably also going to act as a wild card in an antidepressant combo. Meaning, it might end up being the *interaction* rather than the drug itself that trips a reaction like depression. Just my guess.

When I went up on my thyroid hormone (which acts as an AD for me) and AD, Provigil (and especially Nuvigil, which was not as nice of a drug) made me feel like a wired zombie - I'd be awake but nonfunctional, my brain just felt like it was flat-lining. It didn't feel like it was doing my depression any more favors, and it was definitely hurting my functioning.

It's one weird drug.

Provigil and Nuvigil were about the same for me. Some days it would work great, other days it would only work for a few hours, other days it would make me an irritable and depressed mess. It was totally unpredictable.

peanut--how are you?
