2 Weeks On Marplan - Very Good So far.....

Posted by JayBTV2 on March 31, 2010, at 13:31:52

Hello,

Just wanted to post that I'm feeling great on Marplan. Switched from Parnate to Marplan after having BP issues w/ Parnate. This week has been fantastic. I've been enjoying things like playing guitar and going to the beach that I haven't been able to in a long while. I feel a lot more like my old self. Also I haven't gained a pound nor had any sexual problems at all.

I really hope this new mood/attitude continues. I'm still the starter dose of 20mg but saw my doc today and told him I wanted to stay at 20mg for now. Usually I want to get to the highest dose as quickly as possible (addictive personality) - so that's a great sign for me....

Anyway I find Marplan to be so overlooked as an alternative to Nardil and Parnate. There are only 2 reviews on Askapatient and there are hardly ever any threads here about it. I'm also my doctors first patient on Marplan...

Just wanted to post something positive in the event anyone was on the fence about trying it. Of course it's still very early but so far for me it seems to be the missing piece. If this does continue and turns out to be more than a "honeymoon" I'll have to pray they don't discontinue it again :/

I'm bipolar 1 and I also take:

Lamictal 200mg
Lithium 900mg
Seroquel 100mg (sleep)
Fish Oil (Miniami Pharmaceutical EPA)
Magnesium (glycinate)

I'll try to post again if anything changes....

Nice, it does seem to be the underdog of the MAOIs never heard of anyone taking it before.

How many times a day do you have to dose it?

Do you know what the half life is?

What side effects have you noticed?

What about dietary restrictions?

10mg at breakfast, 10mg at lunch

Nope. I posted a thread about that here about a month ago and didn't get an answer. Someone replied saying since it's an irreversible MAOi it shouldn't matter. Still odd that that info doesn't seem to be available....

> What side effects have you noticed?

So far nothing. I've never been one to be bothered too much by side effects aside from sexual and/or weight gain problems. But neither of those are a problem as of yet. If anything I've noticed a bit of loss of appetite this past few days. I'll feel hungry (in my stomach) but don't want to eat.

> What about dietary restrictions?

My doc gave me a card printed by the maker of Marplan. The info is also available here:

I have to say part of my quick response is probably due to a very short washout (~3 days) between Parnate and Marplan. I know some will flame and say that's dangerous but my doc and I talked about it and he felt it was ok. So I probably did have some MAO inhibition prior to starting Marplan.

Either way I'm feeling a lot better on Marplan 20mg than I did on Parnate(70mg). Parnate worked in some ways but I didn't enjoy things like I am now - Nor did I feel as optimistic about my life. I feel a lot more like me at the moment. So I'm just happy it's working well at the moment. Hopefully this will continue...

I'll try to update if anything changes.

Meds:

Marplan 20mg
Lamictal 200mg
Lithium 900mg
Seroquel 100mg
Fish Oil (Minami)
Magnesium (Glycinate)

Yes, I think Marplan would be the choice for me.
