Remeron Anyone?

Posted by bearfan on April 1, 2010, at 18:30:28

Was interested in trying this out (suppose to have high efficacy without sexual side effects). Does it really have such a bad reputation for weight gain? Does it automatically make you gain weight or is it just increase appetite? I heard it is quite sedating at first, but goes away after a few weeks.

Yeah, it has a bad rep for weight gain. I didn't do well on it..but my brother did, and he just wanted to eat the fridge out all the time. He gained about 30 pounds in 3 months. He lost the weight after going off it. I personally felt he was in the best shape mentally, but it was his choice to go off it. He was sedated for a bit, but that cleared up.

Some do really well..so it may be worth a try. Take care.

Hi,

Remeron stimulates the appetite.
So you have to watch what you eat.

This drug is quite sedating,
but you take it at night for sleep.

I had a problem with daytime somnolence,
until I began with Wellbutrin.

Best regards,
X-ray

This drug was one of the few meds that helped me with apathy, procrastination, lack of concentration.
The somnolence lasts only a few days, than it is an activating drug.
I could get things done and study for exams.
But I could't control the weight gain,because I couldn't control the hunger.
It made me eat without control! So I quit.
But I am genetically predisposed to weight gain.
I know people who took this drug and didn't gain any weight.
So your body maybe works different.
The hunger it causes is not the same for all people and I've heard that it becomes less with time.
Besides the hunger it's a perfect drug.
No sexual side effects.

A friend of mine with bipolar I disorder and postnatal depression took 30 mg Remeron + Zyprexa(!) for 2 years and didn't gain any weight!
She said ''it makes me hungry, but I can control myself''.
She has always been thin (not anorexic) and is not predisposed to hyperphagia.
People who are predisposes,as I am,react very sensitive to these side-effect,but you never know unless you try.
Mirtrazapine did a lot for my anhedonia.
I'm very sad that I had to stop it.

There's a theory that part of it's appetite stimulating action is due to it's effect on histamine receptors, and that these receptors are ''covered'' from the 15 mg dose and above.
That means that the appetite stimulation doesn't increase after the first 15 mg.
I don't know if this is correct, but MY experience was, that 30 mg and 60 mg dosages didn't had much difference on the appetite stimulating effect.
(The 60mg didn't make me hungrier than the 30mg,
but the 30 mg did me make already to hungry!).
There are a lot of different reaction to this med,it depends on your metabolism.
It's worth a try if you suffer from anhedonia and have no weight problems.

true about metabolism in people//some can drink an eat what they like, i was the same till i started meds //first prozac sort of crept up on you the weight //been same on any 1 been on. but remeron is the worst//your food craveing may not get any worse after 15mg //good job or we would eat a horse a day//but im no haveing it that weight increase still dont rise as the dose does,it does///a real buddy of mine kieth WILLY williams was on remeron for years at high doses,he died at 52 heart attack brought on by his 20 stone frame////now he would not be able to control his eating caused by remeron as his brain was nuked //he would not have any idea how fat he was //an the hospital would not bother as he was a perfect patient never complained// just what they like, bang in the meds an look he,s cool, you wont convince me with this med the weight gain i got in the short time on it was unbelieveable// i would go as far as saying %70 suffer gross weight gain, wether by the med or it stimulateing the appetite //of course a few wont ,but im not talking about the few

It's a shame your friend died at 52 and the pdoc didn't take him off the med as soon he saw the imense weight gain!
Yes Remeron does cause weight gain in the most cases.
Don't forget that there are depressed patients that loose a lot of weight because of the depression.
My mother had a major depression episode and lost weight until she was only 40 kg (80 pounds) and had a very high blood pressure at the same time.
Remeron saved her.She only took it for 6 months.
I think she wouldn't be alive anymore without this med!

I think pdocs should only prescribe it to under-weight persons who want to gain weight but can't and should closely monitore their weight gain and stop the med if the weight-gain becomes to big.

Shure, there are doctors out there who seem not too care, even if the patient gains 40 pounds overweight!
That's a shame!

I remember sleeping nearly 12 hours or more just on the 15mg dose when I tried it several years ago. I stopped it after only a few days though.

For this drug sometimes larger doses are less sedating than low doses.
In the low dosage-range the sedating anti-histamine effect is more prominent.
At larger dosages the stimulating adrenergic (and indirectly dopaminergic) effect kicks in and this creates a new balance of sedation and stimulation.
For me it was an energizing drug at 30 mg and above, although this can take 2-4 weeks to start working.

Yes that is true very true. I myself was put on it to help sleep but it didn't make me tired at all. And no ad has ever put weight on me even the 250mg of luvox used to take high dose, or the 10mg of paxil took for two years. We are all different. I wasn't any more hungry on any of them. I've been on Remeron for about 4 months now. Started at 15mg, went as high as 45mg. Currently at 30mg.

Sedation:

It was hard core the first day. Less so after that, to the point that it wouldn't even make me drowsy. But during the first few days I felt pretty stoned. I wouldn't have wanted to drive a car.

Antidepressant effect:

Strong at first, the first feeling of near-remission in over a year. Unfortunately it pooped out in about 10 days. Went up to 45mg after a few months, but never got back the initial effect.

Weight gain:

Negligible. I exercise pretty consistently, mostly strength based circuit training. I did notice an increase in appetite, but I could stop myself from overeating. I should say that this is a skill I only picked up in the past few years living in countries where portion sizes tend to be smaller than in the Americas.

So why am I still taking it?

When the doctor added venlafaxine XR (Effexor), which I'd had some success with in the past, it seemed to have a synergistic effect with the Remeron. We even tried lowering Remeron to 15mg on the way to eliminating it, but I started to feel flat. It is possible that Remeron takes the edge off of Effexor, which I find activating, mostly in a good way. While Remeron is busy trying to increase monoamine output, the Effexor is working on the "other end" inhibiting reuptake.

I tried augmenting Remeron with lithium first, but that didn't seem to do anything. It was when the Effexor was added that things started to improve. I even started to feel a bit drowsy when taking the Remeron at night.

yes its a knockout drop when first took thats for sure//you are lucky you can control your food urge,s//but lots in deep depression carnt think that far ,an thats when the trouble starts, //the girl whos farthr died an sent her over the edge the docs new it was the best med for her//,in hospital, they wernt bother at the time about her wait gain just her well being,it was has she got better an started noticeing herself her body changes,so as not to cause a relasp,s the docs took the disition to change a med that was working on a very ill patient ,as not to cause relasp.a good call as i remember she is married now an back at work an slim../// people that dont react to meds in bodily changes , are useually high an anxierty an burn it of that way//an some are on placedo being tricked by there doc because the is no real illness

Yes, everyone reacts differently. I notice people online afraid to try meds based on other people's horror stories. When depressed and anxious, it can really make it hard to consider trying something that might bring some relief. But, I totally hear what you're saying.

Ugh, Remeron was awful for me. It made me very angry and agitated and it did something to my blood sugar that has never quite gotten back to normal. I think people gain weight on remeron because it affects your blood sugar. Mine would "drop" every two hours and I would feel like I would have to eat something. I didn't want to gain weight, so I wouldn't eat, and would just shake for another two hours, and try to make it to four hours without eating.

To this day I can't make it more than four hours without eating. . .but thats better than every two!!

Remeron also caused a worsening of my reflux and I ended up with errosions in my esophagus because of it.
