Can Pristiq/Effexor cause joint pain?

Posted by conundrum on March 21, 2010, at 16:41:46

I have had some chronic joint pain for awhile and I've noticed since starting pristiq it is a little worse. I'm kind of surprised since NE is supposed to improve pain, so I think maybe the pain is from 5 HT overload. Its not a strong pain but its curious. Any ideas?

I believe that SSRIs are known for causing joint pain or flu-like symptoms. I imagine the same might be true of Effexor as well. You can find references to this when searching the Internet.

I personally don't doubt that it can. I developed pain in the knees while on Effexor many years ago, and my sister is currently experiencing a lot of joint trouble on Pristiq as I write this. She is now struggling to get off if without too many discontinuation symptoms in an effort to mitigate the joint pain.

what do you mean struggling without too many discontinuation symptoms. If she doesn't have many symptoms its not much of a struggle. Or do you mean shes taking a really long time to avoid having them?

She's trying to avoid the discontinuation symptoms as much as possible.

Somewhere in the past year there is a thread on that--someone, I think kaylabear, posted a good article on NE induced pain response. So yes, it is possible for some.

It's always something.

Why can't it be simple?

Ain't that the truth. It is so frustratingly complex and demoralizing.
