Nuerontin improves the mood...

Posted by rjlockhart04-08 on March 4, 2010, at 15:44:03

I've noticed that this medication causes dyhoria [bad moods] to disappear. It act's like a sedative but it's not. Lyrica is the same thing only stronger in the dose.

Anyone expereince this?

It's a bit iffy with me. The altered state it puts me in is a bit weird. Low dose is best. Like 150mg. Good for pain too. But it's like a lot of pharmaceutical things....like illegal drugs only worse. In this case it feels like a mixture of a couple of things.

Yes I have. For two years this has become my mainstay for depression. Dose is 800 mg 2 to 3 times a day. Works the majority of days. As it sinks in I can feel the change to a better mood. As opposed to ad's I also become very sociable which is different than the reclusive state I usually brood in. For some reason if I take the doses about 3 hours apart I get a cold feeling so I feel norepinephrine and dopamine may also be activated.
Strange that for some this drug is a mood brightener and for most it doesn't have that effect. Because it makes me tired I tend to drink a lot of coffee when on this med. The coffee and neurontin works well together.

Does it need to be taken daily to be effective? Have any of you on this thread noticed s/e's?

Are there any withdrawal syndromes associated?

Thanks!

Right now I had to go on the percocet again for severe sciatica. Neurontin works well with percocet. They seem to complement each other both mood wise and pain wise.

I don't have to take it every day for my mood disorders. Sides are some cognitive dysfunction (memory not as sharp) and sleepiness that I counteract with coffee. For some reason when taking neurontin I don't get wired on coffee. When I take high dose neurontin it feels like dopamine or norepinephrine is involved.

It is used a lot for neuropathic pain. It not that effective for regular chronic pain such as from arthritis.

Have not had withdrawel issues with it.

Thanks BD,

Guess that answers the pain question. I have another one--do you (or anyone else) feel it raises the overall tolerance to pain? I was told (true or not) that not only do I have real pain issues, I am also more sensitive (lucky, lucky).

Hmmmm.

what the diffrence between this and nuerontin and lyrica?

I know it's stronger, it's approx. 2.5 greater than nuerontin in the dose. Is it better, anyone here taken it?

It seems as if many depressed people are more sensitive to pain. Including myself! I posted a thread not that long ago about that issue. There seems to be evidence that a subset of depressed people have a shortage of endorphins and have pain issues. To many endorphin receptors sitting out there without an endorphin to partner with.

So that is why some of these endorphin starved depressives respond well to an opiate.

Also many find that once their mood is no longer depressed that their pain lessens. This is from a non opiate antidepressant. Wonder if coming out of depression lifts one's endogenous endorphin levels? Need to look for some studies.

As for neurontin it is often used for neuropathic pain. It seems to have some action with the nmda receptor. But it is more effective for neuropathic pain than other pain issues. I have found that when my mood was good when on neurontin I could tolerate my normal arthritis pain better.

That thread on magnesium and fibromalgia gets into more detail about nmda and pain. There are some links within that might help.

Hope this helped.

I've heard anywhere from 4 to 10 times stronger. Unfortunately comes with more serious weight and other issues.

The problem also is that both these drugs have a reputation for pooping out when used as psychotropic issues.

I've never tried Lyrica so I personally cannot compare which one is better.
