Discontinued development of Eplivanserin

Posted by NickCave on January 25, 2010, at 18:08:22

Sanofi discontinues development of insomnia drug Eplivanserin. I am really crushed about this. I think it would be the perfect drug to compliment my lexapro and bring me to full remission. looks like money might be the reason due to patent issues. It seems every new drug on the horizon that I am excited about has been delayed or cancelled. How come experimental AIDS drugs get rushed through the process, but depression drugs are continuously held up? Depression kills too, but most people don't look at it that way.

i have a sinking feeling that eplivanserin was snubbed by the fda because esmirtazapine is also being pursued for insomnia as an indication by an american company, and this rejection triggered the company to give up, as they have before with other drugs; losing hope over being able to release it into such a huge market whose country's decisions influence so many others. of course, esmirtazapine is ridiculously unselective and simply inferior by virtue of its unselectivity. we know the drug. it is incompatible with any idea of its use being reliably safe and without complications; that is if at some point fatigue, mental dulling, weight gain, and diabetes risk is ever allowed to be taken seriously. people's quality of life and even such plainly visible health issues aren't ever the priority. money is. the clout of industry lobbyists. the right-wing libertarian "ethic" that doesn't even let us recognise concepts like "quality of life" and we're supposed to be ashamed to talk about it. we are made to simply not give a sh*t about anyone. i am completely doubting eplivanserin was any less safe or efficacious than (es)mirtazapine or any american antipsychotic that we allow to be rx'd so casually for sleep.

sorry if this is over the top, but this is really how i see the current situation of humanity's ability and willingness to allow itself to help other humans honestly and in good faith.

Truly depressing. Why the FDA doesn't want a non-addictive drug with a new(ish), selective mechanism of action to enter the insomnia market is beyond me, but it could have been useful for anxiety and depression also. Curse them.
