Parnate and ephedra - Scott?

Posted by Maxime on January 3, 2010, at 12:40:09

I know that ephedra is dangerous, so no lecture on that please. But what I want to know is if it would make the Parnate less effective any way.

Does anyone know?

It's not that ephedra is that dangerous but the combination with Parnate would be. Some stimulants can be used safely with Parnate (low dose Ritalin, amphetamine, Provigil, and Welbutrin to name a few), but I would definitely steer clear of drugs like ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine, propylhexedrine, yohimbe etc.--basically almost all of the over-the-counter stuff except caffeine.

If you're trying to address a certain side-effect, let your doctor know; if they're experienced with MAOIs they might be able to help. (If you're just concerned about the hypotension, there are several safe options there, too).

Thank you for your response. I want to use the ephedra for weight loss. I know my doctor won't prescribe anything because I am anorexic and he doesn't want me losing any more weight.

I'm sure you know this, but the cardiotoxic effects of ephedra are much more severe both for people who have eating disorders and women in general (a presumption based on your username).

I won't pretend to know what you're going through but I know how difficult the urge to lose weight can be to ignore. If you're set on taking something, in the interest of harm-reduction, you should know that it's quite dangerous to mix an MAOI with most of the prescription (and many of the OTC) weight-loss drugs. The ones that affect serotonin actually are probably the most dangerous (this is what caused the phen-fen deaths).

I'm really not qualified to give you any [other] advice but I hope you know that there are people here willing to listen without passing judgement.
