Anxiety meds for GAD

Posted by shakeyboy on January 3, 2010, at 12:48:00

Anyone here suffer severe anxiety and panic attacks from GAD? What would be a good med to take or a med combo.SSRI's make my anxiety far worse. Can't take them without a benzo.Currently taking prozac 10mgs for three weeks and klonopin .5 twice a day for two months. Not helping much.Is it safe to take a higher dose of klonopin for a long period of time?

In my opinion only yes. But please check with your doc. Phillipa

Yes, it's safe. If you think it will help you should ask your doctor for an increase. I was up to 4mg of Klonopin a day at one point and it was very hard to come off that. It made me more depressed too. Just some things to think about. Also, I noticed that you are on Prozac. Do you find that helps or worsens the anxiety. Some people find Prozac to be activating and if you do, you might be better off with something like Paxil or Luvox.

I'm on this combo at the moment.

I agree with Maxime and Phillipa... Prozac is usually very stimulating at first, and probably not the best choice for GAD. However, considering that you're three weeks into treatment already, maybe you could consider sticking with it for a few more weeks - I found that the agitation etc lessened dramatically after ~the 4 week mark. In the meantime, my pdoc had me increase my Klonopin as needed.. I've lowered it since then, without problems. So far so good, it has been worth the trouble (Prozac's side effects are downright gnarly! compared to other SSRIs).

So... Definitely ask your pdoc if you can up your clonazepam for a while. Hopefully the Prozac will kick in soon.

Just to add, prozac made my anxiety worse so ya, paxil or lexapro would be a good choice.

Never been able to use ssri as monotherapy for severe GAD. All too activating for me. Had to pair with buspar or klonopin. Yet klonopin or buspar as monotherapy was also not ideal.

My advice: use a combination of ssri and klon or buspar. If prozac turns out not to be the right ssri, paxil or zoloft would be my next choices.

be well,

Which SSRI are you on and how much?
How much Klonopin do you take with it and how long have you been taking this combo?
