why can't I drink alcohol?

Posted by morganator on January 1, 2010, at 1:58:22

I know this is not a medication issue, or maybe it is. I just cannot enjoy even a few drinks of alcohol anymore. Recently I drank much more than I ever should and I could not go to sleep. I was so dehydrated and hungry all night.

Often when I try to enjoy a few beers I do not ever even get that warm relaxing feeling from it. Sometimes I just get a headache. I wonder if this has anything to do with me feeling hangover-like headaches on a regular basis.

Not being able to drink like I used to seemed to begin to happen after I got off Zoloft the first time a few years ago. Then after my major mixed episode, it seemed even harder and harder to enjoy 2 or 3 maybe 4 drinks. Now, it is harder than ever to just go out and enjoy drinking a few beers with friends. It's hard enough to do so feeling as bad as I do much of the time.

I think my brain simply is not processing alcohol the same way anymore for some reason. Just one more thing in life I feel I cannot simply enjoy annymore. Geeze, I'm I've only just turned 37.

Perhaps you could enjoy just one drink and not go overboard.

it could be a point of persepective the way you see it, psychologically. Sometimes you can just become tolerant to things, and they seem to change. I took Adderall 20mg for a while and worked like the best, but after time...it lost it's effect and I had to go to 30mg twice daily. It's tolerance.

Do you just drink when you get home from work? I had a beer a while ago, and i've got to say this, alcohol and depression are just the worst because it stops nuerotransmitter's from getting somewhere. And also if your somewhere in life where you just have to "have" alcohol, which is understandable and has been done for many years in the past, you may want to ask your doctor about Neurotin, or Ativan [less advised because it's a bit addicting like alcohol, gives the same "ease" alcohol does, expept it doesnt make drunk feelings]

Alcohol makes my face red...and sweat, anytime I drink it that's what happens. This could go away, but just take easy and see what happens then post here again.

I hardly ever drink anymore. The point I am trying to make is that something has changed drastically in the way I process alcohol in a very short period of time. Maybe I was spoiled in the past. All I know is that every single person my age is still able to enjoy drinking. I get headaches and cannot fall asleep. It's almost as if it stimulates me in a horrible way. There have been changes in my brain that are not allowing for alcohol to react the same way it used to. I was on one medication for years and did drink heavily at times during that period. So, maybe I have done some damage to my more sensitive than average brain.

Whatever is going on with me right now with the way I feel in general and when I try to enjoy a few drinks is NOT normal. Something is seriously wrong here.

I love beer, especially the good ones. Yes it was an acquired one when I first tried it in my teens but I have enjoyed the taste ever since.

I don't need to get hammered. I think what is being misunderstood here is that my brain is NOT reacting well to any amount of alcohol for the same reasons that I feel like my brain is not functioning well much of the time.

I would just be interested in knowing what MIGHT be going on here since my doctor and psychiatrist either don't have a clue or do not want to tell me what they think it is.

If 3 beers made me feel slightly buzzed but too drowsy to continue drinking I would much prefer that.

I know bringing this beer/alcohol drinking issue to this board seems ridiculous in light of all the other suffering here. Believe me, this is NOT my biggest issue. I am suffering at a fairly high level as well. I my suffering is partially tied into the whole brain not functioning normally anymore/not being able to even drink a few beers anymore.

IMHO this is a med effect. I feel that ADs can permanently change your brain in subtle ways (unless you don't do something to reverse that, of course). I also notice that with some meds food, cigars and booze may be more or less enjoyable.

I used to enjoy smoking some good cigars once and a while. Lately I don't get much pleasure off that. I've been enjoying music much more, however. Brain receptors is a quite complex subject.

Stella is a nice beer. What about Krombacher? It's a great one.

Morgan, as you yourself say, you have been knocked around, and maybe you have done some accelerated ageing.

Not many old people can actually drink much alcohol, which is why they generally don't, I guess.

Why did you stop?

I mean, you didn't drink too much (from the sound of it).

Yeah the accelerated aging thing is a bit scary. I mean, my father at 62 could put down quite a bit of alcohol without any major issues. My brother and sister can still drink without a problem

I do think it may have something to do with all the damage done by not just the medications(and maybe mixing too much alcohol in the past), current medications and there lack of being very helpful, and all the chronic depression and anxiety-resulting in a less stimulated brain with neurotransmitter's that simply are not working the way they once were.

I would like to believe that with the right medication and maybe a few other contributors, I could at least achieve feeling about eighty percent how I felt just 2 and a half years ago. Like I said before, I seemed to really start noticing some changes after I got off Zoloft and especially after I had the major mixed episode. Then the following 2 years of hell and being on and off way too many meds had to have contributed some to my current state.

I personally love a good old Guinness. I'll drink a lot of different beers-some of my other favorites-Turbo Dog, Magic Hat, Sierra Nevada, Boddington's, and Bluemoon. Can't remember the other's, there are more.

you have to respect both , meds am beer. they dont go togeather. after drinking way to much to self medicate. when on meds i new them days had gone, but as i say i still have 2 pints of stella every day in the bar, its therapy an it gets me out.i dont dink at night, if i had any bottle in the house ruth would smash it.ie over my head after the sh*t i gave her hammered.there not a med leflet that say,s drink on the med is fine is there. that should be i hint,PILLIPA if i hear that corrona an lime tale again i will personaly force you to drink it,what have you got to loose , no taste ,so what you still get the buzz,an a good nights sleep.dont say liver that was your last lame excuse, try it once then you will know if it works.if thats all i had to take every night i would be danceing on the ceiling.now give me you next excuse .ie i carnt afford it. just do it.
