SJW and tyramine

Posted by nellie7 on December 28, 2009, at 14:32:45

Hi,
Does anyone know if people taking Saint John's Wort should avoid the same foods as those taking MAOIs? If SJW has a mild MAOI effect, could it be that some people would be more sensitive to tyramine-containing foods than others?
Thanks.

I've read a little about this, and it really doesn't seem to be a concern. If you're worried, you could alway start with a very small dose to start, to make sure it doesn't disagree with you.

No, I don't think the MAOI action is strong enough to warrent dietary restrictions. I don't think there have ever been any tyramine crisis associated with SJW

To the best of knowledge SJW should be fine. Phillipa

The maoi function of SJW has been mostly proven false. Any tiny bit of it is found mostly in the stems, which are not often used. And even there, we are talking miniscule.

Food choices are unlimited, though one should be aware SJW speeds up the CYP3A4 liver enzyme a lot. That has implications for reducing blood levels of other drugs. It can affect other enzymes as well, lesser known, as I discovered when I combined it with Zypexa and saw my blood levels of Zyprexa increase 300%.

The thing you will need to avoid, be careful of, or protect yourself from, is sun. Some people can get easily burned while on SJW. This is rare, but can happen.

Eat all you want! Just make it good. :-) Ya know, fresh veggies, no sugar, low caffeine, no wheat, lean proteins, good fats...blah blah blah. Sorry, couldn't help myself. :-)

If you want to read a large archive of SJW forum users or participate in their ongoing discussions, go to sjwinfo.org. The traffic is very light compared to this site, but is very informative. But it's the only place I know of where anyone interested in SJW can go to to be in similar company.

Thank you all! (nm)

What about the recent evidence that there is a risk of developing cataracts on SJW due to photoxicity to the eyes? Wear your sunglasses!!!
