EMSAM - quitting

Posted by RSidney on December 8, 2009, at 18:30:23

I have been on EMSAM for 6 weeks now, going up to the 9mg patch for the last two weeks. It HAS resolved a good deal of my depression and motivation, HOWEVER, I have the following side effects:

No appetite
Permanent Diarrhea
Bad ANXIETY
Insomnia
Rash on back
Blood Pressure down

I am considering sticking it out another couple weeks. Anyone have experience with simliar side effects, did they go away?

Appreciate any feedback.

When EMSAM first was out klonopin was added for anxiety and yes for some the rash was a problem they rotated sites. One woman my own pdoc had on the Patch did have to come off as the rash per dermatologist she saw was too bad. Did you google the archieves? I remember similar problems. Good luck Phillipa

Phillipa - do you recall any archives on EMSAM with people having to quit due to the following side effects.

No appetite
Permanent Diarrhea
Bad ANXIETY
Insomnia
Rash
Blood Pressure down

I have all of these from EMSAM. Shame because it has relieved my depression and given me more motivation.

Seriously google Robert David he was the first and quite a long thread. Some had rashes that resolved, lots of insomnia, don't recall diarrhea. I've not googled that thread in a while. One lady to this day is on 12 mg of EMSAM only med that ever worked for her. Phillipa and let me know what you find?

Very much the sides of maois. Insomnia sometimes goes away. Anxiety sometimes goes away. But since the med is helping you may consider a benzo for anxiety and sleep. There is also a med for the low blood pressure. But that also my normalize in time.

Most of these symptoms do go away. Your body is still adjusting to the medication. I takes a good couple to three months to see the side effects go away. I also went up to 9mg after 3 months on 6 by which all the side effects had gone away. I needed to go up because the depression was still bugging me and now at 9 it is pretty much in check. However, the insomnia came back full force. Two ambien don't do anything (not that they did before) Klonopin helps quite a bit. Hang in there. I'd still take the side effects over the depression.
