Can Vicodin be taken with Parnate?

Posted by fires on November 27, 2009, at 1:32:18

I took one 500mg pill of Vicodin which was given to me while I was in the hospital. I told the nurse that I couldn't take it because I was on Parnate. She said that my doctor (internist) had ordered it. I said that it didn't matter if he ordered it,...

She insisted that it was OK to take. I called a 24 hour pharmacy and the pharmacist said that it was OK to take, so I took it.

I just read online that it isn't OK to take them together.

Anyone know what's up with the conflicting information?

Also, can there be a delayed response to a hypertensive crisis? (such as a few days later?)

Oddly, virtually every medication on the planet says not to take it with MAOIs. I can't think of a pharmacological reason why they could not be mixed, however.

That sounds highly, highly unlikely. If there was an interaction, it would most likely occur during the peak blood level, and hydrocodone peaks at slightly over an hour after taking it. The half life of hydrocodone is about 4 hours. Hydrocodone has at least one active metabolite, but I believe they are all similar in effect to hydrocodone.

If you could not take narcotic painkillers with MAOIs, that would be a serious consideration when taking them, because what if you were in a car accident and in excrutiating pain?

You can take vicodin with parnate. Also percocet and morphine. The narcotics that are contraindicated are tramadol and demerol. Otherwise, narcotics are okay. I just had surgery and take parnate, so I did some research on this and talked to my p-doc and anesthesiologist.

Talking to your doctor(s) is good. If you can't trust your anaesthesiologist, then who can you trust? Someone on this board? I don't think so.

Here's the link:
http://www.drugs.com/pdr/parnate.html

"Demerol and other narcotic painkillers such as hydrocodone and oxycodone"

According to the other replies it sounds like it's safe.

Thanks to all for the replies.

Yes it does say that. Check with your doc or pharmacist. Phillipa
