help me on this one im slipping back

Posted by manic666 on October 29, 2009, at 6:30:33

ok, i go to the hospital week on friday,im on an open referal, so i booked in a month ago,im on the 150 sertraline ,but im not cool with it,i put up with the massive side effects, as i was getting releaf from dep, an anx. But now there,s something wrong. i had a heavy chest infection an head cold. it screwed with the meds .Im comming good with that but i think it took the med out, like nuked it. my dilemer is the p doc wanted me on escitalopram , i said no because the weight gain was stronger that sertraline,i found that to be a lie.The new med AGO is in england ,but will he give it me i dont no,it may not be enough for my anxierty ,So i dont no if to take the escitalopram.it should be an easy taper,i have been reading peoples postsome get get weight gain, some dont, it said weight lose on sert , so its take your chance time/ i suppose the sex side is simular. But i would find out if it is sert thats giving me joint pain.i have got to do something my mood swings are bad, 1 hour cool next i am all over the place. plus the fog is there,i dont want to raise the sertraline ,that will prove nothing,So what you think guys, ago if he gives it me ,or try escitalopram. or soldgier on.i dont think ago on its own is going to be strong enough, an already people are adding ssri,s to it so whats that about ,you are getting the sideffects back.

Manic you've encouraged me to stick with an ad at a high theraputic dose. The zoloft was working good. I say stick to the zoloft. Being sick with infections and flus knocks you for a temporary loop. Just my opinion. Love Phillipa

Hey,
Sorry to hear that you are not doing so well and are suffering from joint pain.

Not sure I understand your question fully...
You are not keen on raising the dose of Sertraline above 150mg, right? In fact it maybe the cause of your joint pain.
Frankly I wouldn't be surprised if this dose was causing swings- higish doses of SSRI's can cause swings for some.(40mg Paxil for me).
Plus response to SSRI's are not dose-dependent. Response plateaus out after a certain dose. so really raising the dose of the Sertaline may not be such a great idea (as u yourself feel) because it does not necessarily mean you will get a better response- just more side effects.

As for escitalopram,I didn't gain weight on it at all. I was on it for a year. But I can't compare it with Sertraline as I have never taken it. But I gain weight on most drugs eg: Paxil (what a joke!)and effexor (!!).
Also I found it to be a great drug for anxiety and taken at night it is not sedating at all (i don't know if people get sedated on it, anyway??) It had no adverse reactions for me- I only got off it to go on Parnate.

The bit I didn't understand was about 'AGO'. Whats that? I looked it up and couldn't find anything. Sorry cannot comment on that.:(

Hope you find some answers and can come to a decision that helps you,

Take care
D

i know the score philipa i have been hear before.i med runs its course at the level you find right for you. if it starts to fail there is no use upping the dose, it very rarely works, in fact the opposite happens with me.my p doc may say go down to 100mg ,who knows but i have had it with these side effects. Its not as if i havent been hear before, i have had a good run on sertraline an now i see an feel the changes. The difference with me an you is i am not affraid of a new med. You have been on the same 50mg of luvox 10 years even though it stopped working years ago you still wont commit to a new med.like me you may have tried a few but not them all .i take any chance for a better quaity of life. There,s one out there for you to somewhere

Just my two cents, by I think your doc and maybe yourself are on the wrong path by thinking of an SSRI as the primary weapon. It might be better to be thinking of a much smaller dose combined with a TCA. Just my own quirk, but while SSRIs can bring short term and sometimes medium term relief to maybe 30% of people, it is extremely rare to see longterm stability with them. So when things start going haywire a little bit, as you are experiencing now, I think it is time to ditch the strategy of pumping up only serotonin at the expense of everything else that needs some help too.

Thanks for this post Bleauberry. Interesting and to the point--something for me to think about.

Hey Maniac, hang in there. I always seem to spiral down when I don't feel well--I'm still working on that. Hope you feel very much better very soon.

hugs,
