Lamictal and racing thoughts

Posted by hitman60 on September 13, 2009, at 22:07:39

I cannot take SSRI medication as it makes me really anxious. I took Wellbutrin and it also make me anxious, not manic. The psychiatrist thought I had a mood disorder but does not think it is bipolar illness. I think I have GAD.

He gave me Lamicatal and I have worked up to 100 mg for about 5 weeks. In the last week I have noticed racing, intrusive thoughts. I thought it was too much caffeine, so I detoxed successfully off of that with just a headache, but the racing thoughts continue. I had to resort to .25 mg of Klonopin to calm me down one night. I am on 100 mg. Can Lamictal cause raising thoughts. If so I need to get off of this.

I dont know why my other message did not come through. But I have other symptoms of anxiety, but never this one. I am unsure whether to just stop or go to 50 and then titrate off. Natuarlly, my doc is on vacation, so I can't contact him :)

Don't just stop it. Go down slowly. You also might find a dosage where you don't have racing thoughts but get benefits from the drug.

Thanks, I just never thought that Lamictal would give me such racing thoughts. I did start taking only 50 mg yesterday, and we will see. Yesterday was fairly good, with a bit of anxiety before bed, but when I settled down and read, it subsided,
This is also 5 days without caffeine or "pot" so hopefully that helps. Does it sound like I am pulling at straws? I will see the psychiatrist on Thursday.
I must say, I am getting kind of scared because nothing seems to calm my anxiety..tried Prozac, Wellbutrin, Serzone, and Lamictal, Testosterone replacement. Will it ever go away????

Why not take enough benzodiazepines to where it goes away?

Yes, my therapist suggested today to stay at 50 mg for a couple a week and take Klonopin, but I have a horrible fear of benzos after seeing Anna Nicole Smith and Paula Abdul LOL. i run, I meditate, I workout, acupuncture, I do everything I can to avoid a benzo, even though they do the trick!

I did notice racing, intrusive thoughts on Lamictal as well. I only took 2 pills though, I hated the effects of the drug. Five months later and I'm still feeling some of the side effects from 2 pills. Whew. Good luck. I noticed that xanax doesn't work nearly as well while on Lamictal for me.

The only benzo that is abused with any regularity at all is Valium, which gives a slight buzz. As you know, this isn't morphine or anything like that. Anyway, if I were in your shoes, I'd take a sufficient dose of benzos to alleviate the anxiety.
