Is Abilify weight gain dose-dependent?

Posted by SLS on September 11, 2009, at 16:48:18

I have gained 50 pounds since beginning Abilify. I am currently taking 20mg. Does anyone know if the weight gain induced by Abilify is dose-dependent?

Thanks.

Good question Scott. I dunno. Most "experts" seem to claim it is antihistamine effects that cause weight gain. While I agree that is a moderate factor, Abilify doesn't have much antihistamine effect does it? My hunch is it is the amount of dopamine blockade that is more responsible. But, probably a lot of factors involved we don't know anything about. Gene manipulation, gene instruction, ya know, stuff like that. Whether weight increases with larger doses or not I really don't know. So it remains, a good question! :-)

Hi Scott,

I can't say for sure, but the "creep" seems to have leveled off since I decreased my dose. It could be coincidence, or it could be a dose effect.

Since it's an atypical antipsychotic and most cause weight gain I'd attribute it to that Phillipa

Abilfy was like magic for me as an anti-depressant, but caused me to gain 2-3 pounds per week. I got hugely fat going on and off it, on and off it. I gained weight at 10mg, at 5mg. I didn't gain weight at 2.5mg, but I also didn't feel better at that dose. So I think the weight gain is dose-dependent, but so are the benefits of taking it. If you gain weight on abilify, reducing the dose to a level where you stop gaining weight also reduces the beneficial affects.

I'm not sure of that if I compare it with Seroquel -- I think in part, yes. It also sneaks up on you without careful notice to food intake and any exercise but I'm sure you're aware of that.

I think Remeron is dose dependent.

Notching up Seroquel I think has increased hunger and problems for me, so it could be dose dependent for Abilify too, but properties are a bit different.
