Amitriptyline dirty but good

Posted by linkadge on August 24, 2009, at 20:36:31

This drug is fairly dirty, but I am noticing some positive results. It definately seems to have more of an uplifting effect than nortriptyline (which was more of an energy boost). My sleep is very good. Good effect on anxiety. Improvement in appetite. Hope to keep improving.

You're lucky. You always seem to notice improvements so quickly. It takes me weeks, if at all.

It may be considered dirty but really, is it that much worse that drugs like Effexor?? With Effexor I get terrible insomnia; constipation; reduced sex drive; nausea; light headedness; increased sweating... The list goes on! I don't think amitriptyline's side effects are worse than some modern anti-depressants, just different.

If amitriptyline works for you stick with it!!

Good luck

I know you've seen me say this before:

Sometimes, people feel an improvement in depression within the first 3-4 days of beginning therapy. This is called a "blip" by some doctors. This blip improvement might last from a fraction of a day to a few days, then disappears. The true antidepressant response is, however, latent. That's why it takes 2-3 weeks to emerge in the most ideal of curcumstances. So don't be too disappointed if your immediate improvement does not last. The true response might be right around the corner.

I think "dirty" is a relative term, a term in the eye of the beholder. For some people, SSRIs are much dirtier than TCAs.

The side effect profiles are distinctly different between SSRIs and TCAs. I don't think any group of common side effects from one class or another is any harsher than the other, just different. In a primitive example, take your choice, do you want constipation and dry mouth or do you want sexual dysfunction, insomnia, and anxiety? For everyone, it is different.

"The longer a new drug is in use the smaller the side effect advantages are compared with the previously existing drugs." Dr. Gillman.

You are on a drug considered to be one of the few gold standards. And you are off to a good start. Very cool. Sometimes my good starts turned out to be lousy later, but sometimes my good starts were early hints of good times coming up. A few clinical studies on pubmed showed that very early responses were statistically predictive of clinical response later, and that lack of early response was statistically predictive of lack of satisfactory response later. So the odds are in your favor.

I am on your cheerleading squad.

Linkadge, what dose are you on?

In my opinion amitriptyline would be a no. 1 AD if it weren't so bloody sedative.
