Experiences from switching from SSRIs to SNRIs?

Posted by alchemy on August 5, 2009, at 18:30:02

I've been on Cymbalta & Effexor, but not in my current med regime. I have also tried all of the SSRIs and am currently on Celexa. I am thinking of switching my Celexa for Cymbalta. I also take Wellbutrin, Lamictal, & Xanax.
Has anyone had big changes between the two classes? (hopefully good)

Hi Alchemy,

Snri's seem to work better for me. I've experienced no trouble making a switch--and I consider myself somewhat sensitive. Am on pristiq now, had been on effexor some years back. Celexa was too fatiguing--brain fog, etc.

Did the cymbalta work for you before?

best,

Thanks for the reply. When I tried Cymbalta I was really messed up & just out of the hospital from trying Adderall & Abilify. A few jolts of ECT got me out of that. I am on a med cocktail where I am not as bad as I was at the time I tried it. So I am wondering if it might affect me differently, especially as a replacement of Celexa.

Alchemy,

I know some or all of it was Adderall causing my moods to swing lower. I loved it for the first week, it was awesome. But then my moods were all over the place, and farther down.
Dang, I wish I could have had that first week continue. It did seem like it got worse with Abilify, but I'm not sure.

Alchemy,

I did poorly on abilify as the dose went up. I did, I think, fairly well at 2mg. Some here take 1mg. Yea, I know about that first week feeling....

oh, I wanted to tell you, depending on Dx, some snri's can set off manic episodes--but you probably know that....

I have found that -- for me -- the SNRIs (Cymbalta and Effexor) are definitely more efficacious than the SSRIs.

Would you say that they were better for your motivation as well?

~thx

hmmm, well, apathy is a major complaint of all the SSRIs/SNRIs for me. But the SNRIs might be slightly less offensive in this regard. Generally speaking though, I'm quite confident that noradrenergic drugs do help with motivation and focus. Of course, too much noradrenergic activity can make me feel overly-sensitive and irritable (see my posts on Savella). Another related benefit, I find that I have a significant amount more physical energy and endurance (i am a long-distance runner) on the SNRIs vs SSRIs.
