Effexor, Cymbalta, Pristiq?

Posted by SheilaC on August 3, 2009, at 7:52:18

I've gone back to my old stand-by -- Seroquel and Klonopin. But I still feel like I need a "boost" for motivation and depression.

I was thinking of adding an antidepressant, but one that doesn't hit serotonin tooooooo strongly. What do you think that would be?

What kind of anxiety disorder do you have?

I would try Pristiq if you have a choice. Many people find Cymbalta fatiguing. All three drugs are potent serotonin reuptake inhibitors. However, I wouldn't want to get too "smart" and try to figure out in advance with certainty how a drug will affect you at this point. You might even consider low-dose Prozac or nortripyline if you feel that strongly about staying away from potent serotonin reuptake inhibition. I happen to like Effexor. It is good for anxiety disorders. Pristiq, the metabolite of Effexor, might work just as well, but with fewer side effects. I can't be certain about that, though. Different is different. Perhaps Effexor has therapeutic properties that Pristiq does not.

Since I did well with Effexor in the past, my doc is willing to let me try 50mg of Pristiq in the AM. I am going to stick with my Seroquel and Klonopin in the PM. He also mentioned adding Wellbutrin SR later if I needed a boost or had sexual problems from the Pristiq.

Seems like Pristiq, Seroquel, Klonpin and Wellbutrin pretty much hit everything right?

That's one hell of a smart combination. Kudos to you and your doctor.

Good luck with it.

Yikes! Are you sure? For now I will just add the Pristiq 50mg in the AM and keep taking my Seroquel and Klon at night.

If I feel I need Wellbutrin, he will add that later.

Do you think I will gain weight with Pristiq? Someone said that they experienced weight loss with Effexor and Seroquel combo?

Who knows. We'll see how this combo works.

FB-- How much Pristiq do you take? How long have you been taking it and do you take any other meds with it?

I did take .25mg of Klonopin with it. I used to take Effexor years ago and they say Pristiq is similar. Did you ever take Effexor?

Hi Sheila,

I currently take 100 pristiq, just upped it last week. I had been taking 50 since Feb. I think 50 is a great dose--I didn't feel side effects (really) other than the libido thing. It felt transparent, which is nice. I would think for you, that would be all you'd need. (I forget if you mentioned how you did on effexor.)

Current meds;

pristiq 100
klonopin .5
dexedrine 35-45
emergency xanax as needed (not often)
sleep aides as needed--not at all since I upped my dose, which I take at night

best!

fb

(feel free to babble me, if you like)

FB - I am still taking 50mg of Seroquel at night and .5mg of Klonopin at night. I am taking the 50mg of Pristiq during the day.

Its only been 3 days, so I don't really feel too different. I'm wondering how long it will take to really kick in. I don't really want to add Wellbutrin to it if I don't have to. But I need to kick this depression.

Hi Sheila,

I did find it took me some time to feel the full effects of the pristiq--at least a month. Other babblers have reported a quicker response time, though, like within the first week or so. Could you add a small dose of wellbutrin and then withdraw it when you feel better? (I don't know....)

best wishes for this to work for you,
