Has anyone heard of a new antidepressant Vilozodone? I believe it has recently been approved or near approval.

Only thing I could find is in phaseIII trials and will submit end of 2009 to FDA. Phillipa so I guess that means still lots of work to be done for approval.

Vilazodone might not appear until next year. The drug company has announced the completion of a phase III trial that demonstrated good results for the treatment of depression.

Vilazodone is a reuptake inhibitor of serotonin and a partial agonist of 5-HT1a receptors.

This is a great webpage for listing various investigational psychiatric drugs of the future.

I didn't know there had been some question regarding this. I haven't looked for corroborative evidence of it, though. Since so many studies presume 5-HT1a agonism to be a mechanism, I figured it was considered putative.

It has happened before that the scientific community stated that a particular property of a drug was putative, relying on a single study to determine this. Provigil is an example of this. 5-10 years ago, it was touted as being a NE alpha-1 agonist by all published papers. The origin of this mistaken notion came from one or two preliminary studies.
