California Rocket Fuel?

Posted by Zana on July 20, 2009, at 15:19:18

Does anyone have any theories about why Remeron would theoretically be such a potent augementor of Effexor? I am taking it with Pristiq, the new Effexor. I had no AD effect from the Remeron alone but did feel much better when Pristiq was added to the mix.
I'd like to decrease the Remeron. I'm on 45mgs. But I'm afraid of losing the AD effect of the combination, if in fact that's what's helping.
Thanks
Zana

I'm really not sure what is behind the theory why the combination should work. Both drugs do different things, so perhaps they are complimentary. Pristiq inhibits the reuptake of both 5-HT and NE. Remeron might act synergistically to enhance NE neurotransmission through its ability to antagonize presynaptic NE alpha-2 autoreceptors. Remeron also facilitates dopamine activity downstream (fronto-cortical) by blocking 5-HT2c receptors.

If it is necessary, you can go higher with the Remeron. The label says you can go up to 45mg, but I have seen plenty of people go to 60mg and 75mg.

Good luck.

Zana so it is also helping with the pristiq interesting as two different types of effexor. Great to hear. Hope things continue to improve for you. Love Phillipa

Hi Zana,

Wondering if increasing the pristiq would alter the ratio of remeron/pristiq synergy? Maybe then, (just guessing), one could go up on remeron?
