Ok, I think I'll try Savella

Posted by newo38 on July 10, 2009, at 17:56:48

I am looking for less or no sexual side effects. Celexa is bad. Tricyclics are "bad". I want to try savella. I know someone will come and say that savella actually does and etc but I don;t care. Anyhoo, I want to know if it's activating or sedating? Ixel was used for anxiety so maybe it isn't as bad as welbutrin or these other activating drugs.

Perosnally anything that blocks the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine has the potential to cause some sexual sides.

Start on a low (really low) dose and work your way up.
It starts working quite quickly.

I am taking Savella going into week four. The first two weeks were uneventful but the third week was rough. Severe mood swing, crying very depressed overall feeling. I had read some posts that this actually happened to some people but they stuck with the med and it now works. Up to yesterday I was thinking about changing meds once more because the roller coaster mood was too much. However, today I woke up much better and with a better outlook on life. No weight gain, no sexual side effects and no anxiety.
If you can hold on to two weeks of uncertainty I think this may work. At least, that is what I am hoping.
I will keep you posted as days go by.

Thanks ihatedrugs, please keep me posted on this. People keep talking about roller coaster, does that mean agiation and nervousness or just moodiness? Also, have you taken other ssri's and what is this similar to? Is it like celexa calming (Idoubt it) or like wellbutrin (crack)?

I did not find it agitating at all. I have taken pretty much everything in the arsenal except for TCA or MAOIs. What I mean by a rollercoaster is similar to what happened to blueberry. One day you feel really good, almost too good to believe it but then your mood drops dramatically to a sad state and very weepy. That lasted like five days when all of a sudden I woke up feeling better at least up to therapeutic levels and this happens around the fourth week. So when you try it if you can stick throught the sadness and despair for like 4-5 days then it begins leveling off. I am still doing ok. No more drops but as I said before, the jury is still out. Another thing is I noticed increased productive energy but without any jitters however I have noticed at times being in a bad mood for a short period of time and then it goes away. So in short, I am just experiencing all the side effects which except for those roller coaster days, they are not that bad. No bad sexual effects, no weight gain.
Hope you make the right decision and wish you the very best. I will still keep everyone posted as I know many are watching this new med closely.

Take care

Thanks bro, well good it isnt agitating that is my big concern. I think the moodiness could be that it takes 6 weeks for meds to fully work but I don;t know for sure. I wish you well.

A couple other things to add to that...

1. The short halflife of the drug will vary from person to person. You could be burning through it faster than you think. You should consider splitting pills or capsules in order to take more frequent doses, perhaps 4 hours apart.

2. The time of the doses should be experimented with. You might do better with a lunch dose instead of a breakfast dose. Or maybe a breakfast dose and a mid-afternoon dose but not an evening dose. Or a breakfast and bedtime dose. Or a lunch and bedtime dose. Or every 4 hours.

I think a lot of the effects are in relation to our own biochemical clock, so we need to find how to time the medication to work in sync with it.
