Anyone use Klonopin as a mood stabilizer?

Posted by garnet71 on May 31, 2009, at 16:45:33

Is klonopin recognized as a mood stabalizer too?

I read somewhere it was originally created to be an anticonvulant...just wondering if anyone has successfully used this as a mood stablizer for BPII as opposed to mood stablizers with more adverse side effects.

I do and it works wonders for me but I'm not BP, it helps me with restless leg syndrome, anxiety, panic and mood stabilization. I have never suffered from the depressive effects that some people do from this drug. It kills 4 birds with one stone for me, and yes it is recognised as a mood stabilizer, but that might still be off label, I'm not sure, you'll have to check with your pdoc.

Hi Garnet, I've been using it for 22 years with zero side effects. When taking in a consistent manner... I take 0.5mg 2x/day, use to be 3x/day,
it will help with the anxiety/irritability side of things.

It depends on the individual and just how severe their symptoms are. I wouldn't throw it in the same lamictal/lithium group, it's just not that effective.

If you have a nervous/slightly irritable depression then yes, it will help somewhat. The key is finding the right combo.

From what you've described in some of your posts, I really believe you should give paxil a try along with the clonazepam and take them both daily. I found when taking ativan or zanax, my anxiety levels seemed to fluctuate which did not help my overall mood one bit.

Try it for 1 month and see how you feel. If things are going good then great, you've got a pretty benign cocktail working for you!

If need be, you can always add to the regime, lamictal perhaps?

Take care, Rick

It works but doesn't describe how it works as a mood stabalizer nor does it mention lamictal, trileptal etc. Love Phillipa

Shasling, got your link--thank you! Someone else mentioned it was developed as an anti-convulsant. Puts it in the same family?

Thanks for all the information--Klonopin sounds like a good option for some.

The page just seemed to metion the idea behind mood stablizers and listed a few main stream ones, there are the ones u mentioned plus tons of others that are share the grouping, that was just a quick reference.
