prozac/lithium combo

Posted by Cass on May 28, 2009, at 21:29:42

I've been on prozac about a month and a half and lithium for about a week and a half. The lithium is supposed to boost the prozac. The prozac wasn't kicking in real fast. I don't take lithium for bipolar. I'm not bipolar. The meds seems to be kicking in now and working pretty well. What I'm wondering is that if the prozac is working now, could I go off of the lithium? I don't like the dehydrating effect of the lithium. Even my hair seems dryer. That's about all I need. I know you'll say to ask the doc, but I don't see him for awhile. I thought some of you might know from experience or knowledge of things like this.

C-
I've taken Zoloft several times over the last 15 years with some success, which has been better than all of the other ssri. I started again 4 months ago on 150mg Zoloft and my doc augmented with 600mg of lithium. It works better for me with the lithium. I will not tempt faith. I will ride this combo train until I hit the poop out station. Good luck.

you might not need as much of a dose as you are taking, but antidepressants really do more work at keeping depression away. you might stay ok for a while, but would remain vulnerable to falling back into depression.

Thanks for the input, guys. Maybe I shouldn't mess with success.

Just a bit of advice you probably don't need: stay away from the alcohol when you're on a lithium/SSRI mix. I can speak from personal experience that it sometimes doesn't work out very well.

Thanks greywolf. I went to a party tonight and deliberately refrained from the alcohol.

I wouldn't worry about taking lithium. It may actually be something that benefits you in other ways over your life time. It may just extend your life span and protect your brain. Lithium also can be an antiviral and boost your immune system.

After a few months, I would talk to your doctor and see if you can lower the lithium dose and maintain the prozac dose. A low dose like 150 to 300 mgs may just be enough to help and give you all of those potential benefits. Unless you are already on that low of a dose.
