Buspar augment

Posted by Zillhouse on April 29, 2009, at 2:22:53

Went to pdoc yesterday and left with a script for buspar.

Currently I'm on 10mg paxil and 150mg Wellbutrin xl. Because I complained of severe sexual side effects and still a touch of anxiety, the doc and I decided that I should drop the Wellbutrin and add buspar to the paxil. He wants me to start buspar at 10mg split in half for an am/pm dose, then to up the dose by 5mg every 4 days until I reach a max dose of 40mg.

I have had terrible sexual side effects with ssri's in the past not at all effected by the addition of wellbutrin.

Is the paxil/buspar combo a good alternate recommendation for ssri induced ED/anorgasmia?

Does anyone have any experience with this combo?

Is Wellbutrin/buspar a possible alternate combo? (bearing in mind anxiety is my main problem)

Thanks

Zill

Paxil attaches to the serotonin transporter more tightly than any other SRI drug. If you have an anxiety disorder and run into a dead end, you might try Effexor. I think it has less liability to produce sexual side effects. It makes a great drug to treat Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD).

Good luck with the Buspar. Please post your results. It would help a great many people.

cannot tolerate SSRIs after attempting most of them through the latter half of the 90's through early 00's. either too many SEs or not enough oomph to kick the depression and other sx.

then again on over 60 mg buspirone and close to 400mg wellbutrin xl. ramped up to those doses over the years. low dose buspirone wasn't very effective.....once over 50 mg it became apparent it was working and helping the cocktail of meds.

but hey....everyone is different. buspirone is highly effective for this particular poster. for others it is a total bust. YMMV.

Took when first out as then the doses were low 5mg I think with low dose benzos and very low dose of paxil and luvox so low almost not measureable but nothing from that dose of buspar. I'd heard then that if you have taken benzos that buspar doesn't work. Phillipa

WHERE did you hear this? do you have a link to a study? it could be helpful if you would include such additional information about things you hear so that ppl can follow up and read for themselves. funny how different we all are in our first person accounts of reactions to medications.

low dose (half to one mg) generic clonazepam has been taken along w/ the wellbutrin xl and the buspirone the entire time and the buspirone has been terrifically effective. the preceeding info in this post is this poster's first hand personal experience.

sorry your experiences weren't as beneficial Philipa.

Maybe it was due to the time when buspar was only given at low doses. Long time ago. Phillipa

while i did get a script for it, i never actually took buspar. 40mg isn't as high as you might go.

Zillhouse, yes-try the Buspirone for sure. Buspar doesn't have sexual side effects...according to many users.

Scott: "you might try Effexor. I think it has less liability to produce sexual side effects"

Please don't give Effexor a good name in the sexual department (unless you like taking 2 hours to climax if you can at all)--it is the worst of all the xxRIs for sexual side effects! I know I'm not the only one who thinks that. It can be negated by Wellbutrin for some people.

I'd def. tell everyone to try Buspar. Of course--that's what I take. lol. No, really, I like it because I get almost no side effects at all and it doesn't feel like I'm on a drug. I have to augment w/Xanax at times though. But for me, I don't think it would help with the sexual side effects with an SSRI/paxil, though I read someone's comment here that buspirone can increase libido, it did not do that for me. I doubt it, but you never know i guess.

I have GAD and wellbutrin never caused anxiety for me. I'd get anxiety, however, with thoughts of having to take something like Paxil...

Buspar hasn't done a great deal for my anxiety - although it would be unfair to say that it hasn't helped at all. Trouble is, here in the Britain, the maximum dose 45mg. A lot of people don't seem to respond until they reach 60mg+.

As far as sexual side effects go, Effexor is one of the worst for it. It certainly does decrease libido (as well as causing some weight gain).

However, I do believe the Buspar has reduced Effexor's unwanted sexual side effects a little with me.

Have you also considered Ginseng? That has a positive effect on libido but be careful as it can be stimulating and exacerbate anxiety.

wellbutrin xl hasn't been out ten yrs yet....clarification for prev. post: have been on every previous version of wellbutrin (immed. release, then the SR version, and finally the XL version whenever it came out 2003/2004? not sure) alongside the buspirone. never used monotherapy buspirone...has always been augment for wellbutrin.

the buspirone seems to keep the feelings of anxiety at bay enough to function. it also keeps the wellbutrin induced anxiety tamped down to a tolerable level.

been a long time working w/ a great pdoc to find an effective cocktail. also lots of tolerating unpleasant SEs to get to the "oh! this is working well enough after all" stage. again just this poster's personal experiences FWIW.

good luck and hope you find relief soon. anxiety blows.
