Nardil and Abilify

Posted by bri on April 26, 2009, at 22:11:41

I'm now taking 45mg of Nardil along with 30mg of Abilify. I also take an average of 1.5mg/day of Xanax (which I want to wean myself off of entirely if possible). I'm BPII, but the biggest issue for me now is severe social phobia. Previous to Nardil I was on 3mg of Xanax, 30mg Abilify, and 500mg of Lamictal. I dropped the Lamictal to get on Nardil. I'm bullish on Nardil and don't want any med to interfere with it. I've found that if I do not take any of my Abilify, I feel less anxious. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Yes abilify always made me anxious. I had to stop taking it. 30mg is a very high dose. I've never been able to take more than 15mg, and even that was way too much for me. If I were you, because abilify is a very strong med, I would take a lot less, and maybe you can tolerate it better. I had best results at 5mg.

nardil might be fixing a hypodominergic state that hte abilify also helped, but moreso, so that abilify is now a net negative.

I believe you're right on with the hypodominergic state that the Nardil created. I never got that from the abilify before though, but what do you mean that the abilify is now a "net negative"? If they both were doing the same thing shouldn't they be working in concert on the dopamine?

Thanks d/r.

Thanks for sharing. I'll discuss with my pdoc either removing Abilify from the equation entirely. or cutting back on dosage levels, and will let you know what happens.

if abilify, when taken at sufficient dose, always moves your DA level to '30', that might be better than '20' where you were before, but not as good as '50' that nardil causes on its own.

Are you saying Abilify can actually block the count of dopamine especially if it thinks the dopamine level is too high?

well yeah, i mean it is an antipsychotic. it is a partial agonist, which means it causes some effects like Dopamine would at the dopamine receptor, but not as many. so by taking a high dose, you get it filling up most of the receptors, but its not like if you took a tonne of a DA agonist, its more balanced. but not necessarily good, even at a moderate dose it was totally draining for me.

I feel this question has been best answered by others' posts, esp d/r. My two cents: abilify was 'good' (that is not detectably negative) for me at 2-5mg. As it was upped my depression and anxiety increased quickly and with a vengence. I was up to 15mg before being taken off.

Thanks Candace, for your feedback. Looks like all of our responses to the Abilify are similar. I'm wondering if there's something else to add to the Nardil to also increase dopamine levels.

its not really about dopamine but you could take lamictal with the nardil if both helped you before
