Seroquel and Anxiety

Posted by Zana on April 15, 2009, at 8:39:40

I know seroquel is supposed to be sedating but my experience is that although it makes me sleepy at night, it increases my anxiety upon wakening and during the day makes me feel physically shakey. Any experiences with this? I see my pdoc this afternoon and want to figure out what needs adjusting.
Thanx

Yes, I had the same thing it just made me jumpy and the doctor said it was akathisia. The firt dose was ok but after that is was horrible. When I went to 50 mg it was horrible.

What is akathesia? Agitation is listed as the second larger reason people discontinued seroquel. I'm just afraid to decrease it because it did give me some modest relief from depression. Maybe the Pristiq will cover me. Hope so.

I think you should take more seroquel. It only has a 6 hour half life. So 4 doses a day should work.

Akathesia is a horrible restlessness within the body can't sit still aggitation. I'd google it for the correct definition. Phillipa

at lower doses, when my tolerance to seroquel was low enough, seroquel knocked me out so that i slept well, and once i got used to the sedation, i was fine during the day. then in the past 6+ months, my tolerance has gone through the roof so that i need 400mg or more to fall asleep. i think because of this high dose, i've experienced akathisia like others have mentioned. it used to be just at night after i took the seroquel-- i would feel this horrible twitchiness in my limbs, especially my legs, and felt incredibly uncomfortable like i needed to kind of flail around but got no relief from doing it. after awhile, i started getting akathisia symptoms during the day as well. my pdoc prescribed propranolol, which has helped me in the past when i've had akathisia. in my exeprience, propranolol is far superior to cogentin, benedryl, or other drugs suggested as treatments for akathisia. it might help with your shakiness.

I got those a couple of times, that feeling like you just have to keep moving your legs...it's really weird experience. I was glad I didn't get that much. I have been on low dose seroquel for a very long time...now so I just don't get that akathesic? feeling

You are serious ? Well I suppose a long time ago I did things like splitting doses of my polypharmacy, but I doubt most people can take Seroquel around the clock (unless that's what XR does, I couldn't come to a conclusion of different side effects or the like, maybe I didnt give it a longer trial).

As Seroquel builds up in the body, it is really known that for most all people it is unnecessary to take it but at night, despite the average half life of 6 hours. The plasma life is more what is important.

I'm not sure someone could stay awake with that much antihistamine sedation in a series of one-shots, instead of XR, throughout the day.

I take perphenazine 3 times a day at a highish dose and stay awake. It has a half life of 9 hours.

I thought you were supposed to take seroquel atleast twice a day?

I think it might depend on the diagnosis. Love Phillipa

You may be used to the sedation, I would say its an individual thing.

> I thought you were supposed to take seroquel atleast twice a day?

Not of current standards of practice of what has been observed with Seroquel. I can't imagine someone needing a full load of 800+ and taking 400 at night and in the morning -- it would be very hard to drive or work.

I mean I suppose there's an exception to every case but I haven't heard of it personally.

I was not suggesting that much seroquel. Just enough to get by. What ever that may be, 100mg in morning and what ever in evening, maybe. Just to keep the anxiety from coming back.

I had a panic attack when I tried Seroquel (like 13 mg or something benign as that). And some trippy vision problems--I couldn't figure out if my husband's hand was as big as it looked. It looked too large. That was when I tried it last year. I also tried it 5 years ago (must've been more than 13 mg), and ended up sleeping through two days. Yucky stuff, for me. Good for others though.

Don't you wish this was like an equation? Seroquel + WHAT ASPECT OF MY BRAIN = anxiety/trippiness/knockdown sleep

The same thing happened to me but went away in a few days. I now take 50mg at night for sleep. I think it was the fear of taking this drug.

Zana: I took seroquel for only two nights, and the day after each, I had panic attacks (a condition which HAD been improving a lot). I stopped, and don't intend to take this med. again. That's just me. But yes, I had the same problem. Good luck with whatever you decide.
