Will Luvox help? Make me manic?

Posted by CareBear04 on April 7, 2009, at 21:14:19

My diagnoses have never been entirely clear. I was found to have ADHD in first grade and take Adderall. I was diagnosed with Bipolar in college and take mood stabilizers. As far as explanations of my other symptoms, many pdocs have made many hypotheses, including pretty much every anxiety disorder. The first pdoc to prescribe an antidepresant also started me on Ativan, and I've been on benzos ever since. When I started taking stimulants, they helped me concentrate so much better, but there remained a problem of a sort of obsessiveness. I tend to fixate on things in general, and with regard to assignments, I obsess so much over making everything perfect that I end up procrastinating until the last minute and finishing things late.

Last time I saw my current pdoc, I remembered that I'd had an amazing experience on Zoloft years ago. Up until then, I'd always had massive trouble writing papers and finishing exams--I would scribble until the last minute and be the last to turn things in. After about a month on Zoloft, I was able to finish things and let them go like never before. I finished exams with more than half an hour to spare and didn't obsess over completing a draft of my thesis. I was also much more engaged in class, not only paying attention but also participating. At the time, I don't think I attributed the improvement so much to Zoloft as I thought it was just evidence that I could excel if I felt good mentally.

For reasons I don't quite remember, I stopped the Zoloft eventually, then switched to Prozac. I don't remember having the same sort of clarity of thought on Prozac, but it definitely boosted my mood. WHen my pdoc ramped up the dose without a mood stabilizer, I got very manic, but for about a month or maybe a little more, it was a pleasant hypomania that I really enjoyed. Both Zoloft and Prozac made me pretty jittery.

Anyway, after my last appointment, I've really wanted to go back on an SSRI to try to minimize my obsessiveness so that I can complete assignments and enjoy life without being constantly preoccupied with worries. Despite the obsessions, my mood is actually pretty decent, but I would also love for a spurt of that energy and inspiration I get when I'm manic. Is Luvox very activating? What is the possibility of my becoming manic on it? I'm currently not on lithium but am on Lamictal and Seroquel.

I would love any input or experiences. THanks!

For me luvox is the most sedating of the SSRI's but SSRI"S rev me up. On benzos also. Love Phillipa
