Increased anxiety/depression from Effexor XR??

Posted by matt sanz on April 2, 2009, at 18:08:37

I've been on Effexor XR (37.5mg) for 6 days and I've noticed that I've been feeling more anxious and depressed than usual. I've also noticed a decrease in my appetite, which is low as it is. Is this normal when you first start out? Does it mean anything in terms of whether the med will be effective or not? I'm increasing to 75mg tomorrow..
thanks.

Well Effexor's a bit different from SSRIs because it also acts on norepinephrine, which can be stimulating for some, but like all the docs say, as long as the symptoms are not too debilitating, its best to wait 6 weeks in your trial before assessing efficiacy.

You will notice some effect, it's not noticateble in, a "indirect" feeling. Takes time. Effexor is, a stimulating AD. May help with..motivation, energy, but it also can cause irrtibility, which is "your" stimulated, but don't want to be, causes a bad mood. Don't drink caffine, with it.

is more "anxious", feeling on edge, or irrtible (bad mood).

take care...

Hi,

I had a lot of anxiety when I started trying to take Effexor. I took 150mg straight away though :-( I also experienced terrible anxiety on Cymbalta.

I took Effexor 150mg for about three months a few years ago and it never really got me completely out of my depression. Who knows though maybe if I'd have upped the dose and given it longer it would have eventually worked.
