Adderall and Zyprexa

Posted by MikeS12345 on March 20, 2009, at 20:12:23

Hello, I was wondering if it was possible to mix adderall and zyprexa. I read adderall increases the dopimine levels in your brain and zyprexa lowers it. Does that mean they cancel each other out or do they work on different parts of the brain? Thank you.

Mike

Basically, i was on this combination 4 years ago....
If you truly have mood swings, that is "classifed". They both will work ok, Zyprexa is...nueroleptic/antipsychotic which is good for "delusional" thinking. Which is caused by mainly, excess dopamine through out parts of the frontal cortex, (mistransmission).

Adderall increases dopamine levsl, it's amphetamine. In the past, there where Patents, which combined Amphetamine/Compazine
Thorzine/amobarbital/phenobarbital. Alot, i'll have to research my memory on the web. But, this did happen back in the 60-70's after that....combinations, Dexamyl (amp/amobarbital) discontined because it did not benefit a condition. Too abusable for antidepressant.

It should work ok, the only thing in know about Zyprexa is Wieght gain,.....it can make you "bloow up" decreases sugar levels, increases hunger pretty much.

Just keep in touch with your doc, if anything happens.

This question comes up frequently. Will an antipsychotic and a stimulant cancel each other out?

In my own experience, no. They can however both take the edge off each other. If an AP is too sedating, the stimulant will help diminish that. If the stimulant causes unwanted weight loss or insomnia, the AP will help diminish that.

The side effects tend to cancel out, but not so much the therapeutic effects. My own experience, however. When I took Ritalin with Zyprexa, believe me, it felt like full strength Ritalin. Actually it worked better in terms of mood combined with Zypexa than it did by itself by a long shot. So I believe there is some synergy going on.

A common misconception is that Zyprexa lowers dopamine. It does not. Brain concentrations of dopamine actually increase. The difference is that some of the dopamine receptors are partially blocked.

The theories we talk about are, in my opinion, overly simplistic. Things are much more complicated than we know. While we may be able to say how a drug is specific for this or that, what receptor affinities it has and such, that is only 1/10th of what we don't know about the drug.

For example, if Adderall causes a release of dopamine but Zyprexa blocks it, then they cancel out, right? Not that simple. Not by a long shot. How then do we explain what goes on when these meds are mixed? Well, we can't. We can't even explain but a small fraction of what one med by itself does. The best we can do is go by observation and experience, and add to that discussion of hypothesis. In my own personal ones, Ritalin and Zyprexa partially cancelled each other's side effects, but increased the antidepression effect more than either alone.

To all - thank you

Hello,

Thank you for your responses. They were very insightful and helpful. I been taking Zypexa and Adderall. I took a week off of Zyprexa and I noticed that I feel a lot more on edge with just Adderall. I think I might go back on the Zyprexa. The only thing I don't like about Zyprexa is the weight gain. Thanks again for all information.

Mike

i TOTALLY agree with bleauberry on the synergy thing.
i was on ritalin and zyprexa for a while before stopping zyprexa and totally agree. infact. after i stopped the zyprexa about two months later i actually ended up switching to adderall.
have also been on adderall and zyprexa for short period of time. i think only a few months before i stopped the zyprexa.
never had any adverse effects at all.
