Parnate and constipation

Posted by 3y2l on March 13, 2009, at 6:51:49

It's not a bother really but it can't be good for the body to only have a BM once a week or so. Is a stool softener allowed wih Parnate? While on the subject of Parnate, anybody else have extreme afternoon fatigue? It's almost narcoleptic.

Well....it appears you are perfectly capable of putting SOME of your brilliant "findings" in English, LOL

d/r, you are so entertaining sometimes.

And calm down, I see that just the very thought of it is very upsetting to you. Take a deep breath. Have some bran.

beans loosen you up? I didn't realize that. Diet changes haven't made a difference but stool softener does! Still can't get past the fatigue though! It's almost narcopetic. Then I wake up a thousand times during the night. Between 1 and 1:20 this morning, I woke up 4 times.

Hi 3y21,

I think he means the kind you have with Mexican food, cant think of the name, not green beans. Broccoli, salad, coffee, prunes (yuk). I think you can use the softener now and then, ask your doc how much is okay.

As for fatigue and insomnia, s/e's common to Parnate. Depends how long you've been on it and what dose. I've been on for 5 months (full remission of MDD, btw ;-) I'll try to remember what hit when. First I believe it was insomnia, pretty bad, then afternoon fatigue, almost narcolepsy like you said (I found that staying awake was way to go cause it passes), fatigue during day, and insomnia at night, I geuss most a/d's have sides and Parnates most annoying is the insomnia, and the fatigue it causes the next day.

The best thing to do is figure out with your PDoc now what you will use to help with sleep. This can become a serious problem for some, and even if you could sleep in, you don't want to mess up your schedule OR dose time. I've found taking it the same time everyday is crucial (8am & 1pm). I take 80mg Parnate and 60mg Ritalin split in two doses. The ritalin potentiates the Parnate, but it also keeps my BP up (that can cause fatigue, are you checking that?) and it keeps me awake and energetic during the day so I'm tired at night.

I'm still a night person anyway, so some nights I stay up just cause I feel like it, I don't recommend it!

Good luck,

~Jade

I would love to take the Ritalin which works great with me and the Parnate but I know my Pdoc will never allow it.

I'm on 80mg parnate/day, so I understand your problem.

Go to the store (Walmart/wholefoods) and pick up some ground flax seeds.
Every morning put 2 tablespoons on your cereal/oatmeal/yogurt/whatever.
I also eat plenty of fruit throuout the day, and take a high quality fish oil evryday as well.

By doing this I usually have 1-2 bowel movements/day. And as an added bonus, I've lost 10 pounds without really trying.

Afternoon fatigue is very bad at first. It never fully goes away with me, but it does get much more tolerable with time.
Exersize 3x week also has helped with the fatigue.

Hope this helps,
Anthony

How long at 80mg? Do you augment it with anything? Has it cleared your depression or whatever Dx you have/had? Just like to here what others are doing ;-)

I will try that. I actually have flax seed in my fridge but have never known what to do with it since I don't like it much. Lost 10 lbs? That would be great. I was first on Nardil and gained 20 lbs in 4 weeks! I have been on Parnate (no more than 3 per day so far) for about 2 weeks and I have gained a lb or two. It's frustrating!

Hi Jade,
I've been at 80mgs for at least 2 months now. This is my third trial with parnate over many, many years with TRD. I Actually went up to 90mg, and felt a brief breakthrough on a drive home from work.
Unfortunately, it didn't last & I'm now augmenting with high quality fish oil(just began),and low dose Naltrexone. Also force myself to exersize 3x week.
I'm certainly better than I was, but not where I need to be.

How has the Ritalin worked out?

Anthony

Hi Anthony,

I'm gonna be honest, without the Ritalin to potentiate the Parnate, I think my results would be transient at best. I'm not sure if you saw a post or two by me around the holidays, but I was with my old PDoc, and he refused to augment with anything.

I was really frustrated being left at ineffective doses for weeks on end, no augments. So while I DON'T recommend this, I took 5mg tab of Ritalin one day, and one 5mg tab the next. I didn't feel anything so I stopped. Later that day, out of the blue, complete remission. Just like that. It lasted 10 days.

When I went to new PDoc, I asked him how I got that 10 days, and he said the Ritalin. I need Dopamine. And I've been great (relatively speaking!) ever since. I'm at 90mg of Parnate and 60mg of Ritalin. We might tweak that here and there, but I feel so much better I'm certainly not complaining ;-)

Some use a tca and that works too, I think only Nortryp and Desaprimine as you can't add SSri. I'm not sure, ask Scott if you are considering tca.

Good Luck!

Just for background, I first tried Nardil for social anxiety and depression/dysthymia. It worked somewhat for the anxiety and well on the depression. However, I was narcoleptic in the afternoons, had many other symptoms, but most of all I gained 26 lbs in 2 months. Now that is a side effect I can't live with. I'd be bed bound by the end of the year. So, I tried Parnate because the weight gain isn't supposed to be as bad. Hasn't done anything for anxiety but again fine for depression. Been on it since 2/26 and have gained 7 lbs. Anybody else have this massive of weight gain. I don't know what to do. Stop the Parnate, go back to the Nardil and try not to look at food much less eat it, stay with the Parnate longer and see if it will have an effect on the anxiety once I get the dose up (I'm still only at 20-30 mg) or completely get off the MAOI and try something else but what? I'm pretty familiar with all the psychotropics and I just can't decide. Any thoughts?

Hi 3y21,

Parnate is actually known for weight loss, I was almost anorexic on at first, I had to force myself to eat because I was losing weight. Are you sure it isn't something else you are taking? Is your thyroid in normal range? Thats all I can think of.

I've never tried Nardil but I've heard its just as you say. I geuss if you're gonna have to watch your weight anyway, I'd stay with the one you like best. Sorry, that's all I got...oh, can you add a stim? I take Ritalin, keeps my BP up and really potentiates the Parnate. Full remission, energy too! Except for now, lol. Too late to be on here!

i think it might be if you are used to lack of hunger due to lack of appetitive motivation, you probably aren't used to actually controlling your hunger and eating patterns, especially if you have been depressed for years. probably especially bad if you don't yet have normal life activities back as other ways of being busy doing goal-oriented stuff, eating is an easy reward.

Hi 3y21,
I am in the same situation as yourself. on Jan 1st/09 I started Nardil ( NEW Nardil ). I was driven to eat and eat. My weight gain was scarey.
I started Parnate on March 3rd 2009. I have been ill and depressed, waiting for the Parnate to start working. Lying in bed, unable to organise decent meals, I have been nibbling dry cereals. You could blame the Parnate for my 2 kg weight gain, but I don't think that would be fair.
I think we need to give Parnate a bit longer.
Our weight gain may fall away once we are up and moving about happily. regards Chihuahua.

Yes, I was hoping for a weight loss effect, not that I'm heavy. I tracked my foods the first 10 days and although I gained, my intake was exactly the same. I also fast walk/jog 4 days a week. Lying in bed I am not with 2 toddlers and a FTx2 job so I'm active. I do tend to have an opposite effect on everything. Provigil made me sleepy, Nardil didn't have the social anxiety effect it has the hype over, etc. I gave the Nardil 2 months. Does Parnate help the social anxiety piece?

Dear 3y21, you certainly sound as though you function much better than I do. My family are grown up, and I have several severe physical illnesses, which drastically reduce my exercise ability. My main diagnosis is severe atypical depression, with vegetative and weight gain results. Only if I am pushed beyond my limits do I become very anxious. (need quiet time).
So I guess I am not the right person to talk to you about your results on social anxiety with Parnate. I have always enjoyed my own company, and would become exhausted if I had to be among people all day. I must say that I admire your coping with your schedule.
The last time my weight was normal was 30 years ago on the "old Nardil". I refuse to go back onto the SSRI " merry go round",
because that resulted in a weight gain of 31kg. I am going to stick with Parnate, maybe supplementing it with Ritalan and a benzo to sleep. My over weight is killing me.--sleep apnoea, coronary artery disease , breast cancer, etc.
Dear 3y21, you may want to give Parnate a bit longer trial, because it is not so long that you stopped nardil.
Best wishes from Chihuahua.

Hi 3y21, I realised that I have been rabbiting on to you about every thing except to tell you that I started Parnate on 3/03/09, and I have put on 2 kg in weight, even though i had felt much more in control of my food intake than when I was On New Nardil in january and February 2009. I suspect that the damage done by New Nardil may still have been in my system, because the uniquely new nardil f*rt*ng has only just now settled down.

So, hang in there with Parnate!!!
