Lexapro with doxepin for sleep

Posted by NickCave on March 10, 2009, at 14:10:33

Has anyone tried combining a low dose of doxepin with lexapro for sleep. I currently take 10mg lexapro and have been using either generic benedryl or unisom to help me sleep. these work really well for 3-4 days, then they seem to lose their effectiveness. My pdoc wants to add 10mg of doxepin to help me sleep. should I be concerned about tca side effects at this low dose? has anyone successfully used this combo?

really i don't see why you wouldn't use cyproheptadine. better evidence that it improves sleep architecture, short halflife so you don't wake up hung over, its dirt cheap.

at low doses doxepin is just an antihistamine, not as crap as benedryl, but still.

isn't cyproheptadine a serotonin antagonist? wouldn't it be working against the lexapro?

there are many serotonin receptors, in various locations. the increased serotonin from an sri hits all of them, but only some contribute to the therapeutic effects. some contribute so side effects. in this case, it will 'work against' the negative effects on sleep quality.

Doesn't cyproheptadine increase appetite a lot? But then, I guess doxepin increases it as well, doesn't it?

Doxepin sent my appetite through the roof. I put on 10kg in just a week... gave the stuff up after that.

cyproheptadine didn't do that to me, but it also didn't make me sleepy.

Interesting. Doxepin definitely increased my appetite as well but nothing like what you experienced.

Cyproheptadine made my depression return to very near its full force. I took it with lexapro. Be careful with that.

I was wondering about that. it doesn't seem like a good long term sleeping solution.
