Cytomel and adderall

Posted by yellowbird01 on March 10, 2009, at 19:55:23

Hello everyone.. I typically post over on the psych board so apologies for those who dont know who the heck I am. :)

I've dealt with treatment resistant depression for several years. Been on many many ADs, mood stablizers, etc with no real success. I'm now taking adderall in the mornings which helps me get going and function better. I saw my pdoc today and he prescribed 10mcg cytomel in addition to the adderall. I've had my thyroid tested and my GP stated the results were normal, but pdoc feels that this addition might be useful anyway. I understand what cytomel is often used in combination with an AD, but what about with a drug like adderall?

Also, adderall suppresses my appetite and I understand that cytomel may do this as well. What might the effects on appetite be with these drugs combined? I'm somewhat underweight to begin with and not in a terribly healthy mindset regarding my weight... my therapist has concerns about me losing any more weight because of meds.

Thank you!

hi,

t3 is suppsed to help with improving adrenoceptor sensitivity, so that the noradrenaline from the stimulant could be more effective. i don't know i've seen any studies on it with a stimulant, only with antidepressants, but it seems promising.

thyroid will increase metabolism, but i don't think it has much appetite suppression, so i guess it kind of depends on just what your relationship to food is. cyproheptadine is sometime used for increasing hunger, its good for sleep but if you took it earlier it might help. so i guess something to talk to therapist and pdoc about.

Hi Yellowbird,

I'm not familiar with Cytomel, but wanted to let you know today my PDocNP said Ritalin messes up your thyroid. I brought her my thyroid test results which were low, so the subject came up.

Were you taking that for thyroid issues or for the reason D/R stated?

I heard Adderall reduces appetite in almost everyone. My son took it and was scared of withering away. I take Ritalin, which is perhaps not as strong as Adderall--it doesn't affect my appetite much. But then again, I'm not that hungry during the day. Two hours or so after the Ritalin wears off at about 6 pm, I crave carbs and sweets and tend to overeat. Recently I've been like that before I started on Ritalin though. It's had no affect on appetite for me. Many say Ritalin decreases appetitite--so maybe stimulants affect our appetites differently?

Geez this probably doesn't seem that helpful to you. I think that's one of those kinds of drugs where you can try it out for a week or so and then just quit whenever you want. See how your appetite feels after a week or 2.
