Why does Folic Acid boost my antidepressant???

Posted by mbluett on December 28, 2008, at 4:08:52

I recently started taking the supplement folic acid with my Effexor XR in the mornings. I have noticed that on the days that I don't take it along with the Effexor I don't get an extra 'kick' out of the Effexor. To check whether this was just coincidental or a placebo effect I would take extra folic acid at night. This would again increase the stimulation from the Effexor to the point of insomnia.

Does anyone know how and why folic acid has this effect?

Have you checked the Deplin threads or official website? It's a form of folic acid. But you have to read it to get the full info and absorb it. Phillipa

Folic acid converts to folate which helps convert homocysteine to methione and than to sam-e which helps make neurotransmitters.

You should try a B-complex or B-100! All B vitamins are anti-depressants.
