Hi all,
I just got a new Rx for Pristiq. I'm hesitating on this because when I tried Effexor years ago it made me feel all spacy, jumpy and weird, could never get up to a clinically effective dose...had to discontinue.
How different is Pristiq in its action, side effects, time to work, etc compared to Effexor?
Also, this Pristiq will replace EMSAM (which I washed out of) as my antidepressant. Does that make sense? Do they have similar modes of action or something?
(Yes, I'm scared.)
Any help greatly appreciated!

In reply to Help, replace EMSAM with Pristiq?/same as Effexor?, posted by Roslynn on December 6, 2008, at 17:02:45
Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) is the active metabolite of Effexor (venlafaxine). Some people don't convert venlafaxine to desvenlafaxine well. If you're lacking that enzyme, you might respond better to Pristiq than Effexor.
Pristiq is an SNRI. Emsam is an MAOI. Both are anti-depressant, but they have different mechanisms of action.
Best wishes.
