Being fat can cause psychiatric problems

Posted by LostBoyinNCBecksDark on November 18, 2008, at 1:43:19

Many psychiatric patients take a wide variety of psychiatric medications over long periods of time. Unfortunately, with a few exceptions, most psychiatry medications are notorious for causing bad weight gain. Compound this with the fact many psychiatry patients become physically inactive due to their underlying condition(s) plus sedating medications, and frequently obesity results.

Why does obesity matter to a mood or anxiety disordered person? Because obesity is the # 1 cause of sleep disordered breathing such as sleep apnea. And sleep apnea causes/worsens depression, often making antidepressants much less effective.

So in your quest to "pump up the meds" to treat your refractory psychiatric condition, oftentimes you make yourself fatter and fatter and fatter over the years. Then you have TWO conditions that cause mood and anxiety problems! The original depression you sought treatment for, PLUS the sleep apnea that often develops with medication induced obesity.

What a world!

Calculate your BMI to see if you are obese or just fat and if so, consult a board certified sleep medicine doctor to get screened for sleep apnea. You will probably find your mood disorder improves a lot after CPAP treatment.

....by "not starting more than 3 consecutive threads on the same board..." as stated in the FAQ.

Sorry to interrupt, LostBoy, but maybe you could try and combine some of the more closely related topics in the future, so you end up with only three new threads at any one time, until someone else starts a thread? Thanks.

Dr. Bob is always free to override deputy decisions. His email is on the bottom of each page. Please feel free to email him if you believe this decision was made in error.

You arent sorry you are interrupting and you are interrupting me. I dont care about Dr. Bob's OCD-like micro-management on this board and will post as I please. Ban me if you wish, otherwise I post as I please. This site is a big joke in the real world psychiatric communities BTW.

LostBoyinNC,
You wrote,[...You arn't..I don't...this site is a...].
I am curious as to what could be the underlying feelings that you have in relation to what could have been facts to have motivated you to post the statements in question here. If you could elaborate more about that, I could have the opportunity to respond accordingly.

From my knowledge of 10der, she might mean what she says here.

Lou, dont overanalyze my posts. Just take things at face value. I have a long standing disagreement with Dr. Bob and this board...I have read much dangerous psychopharmacology posts here over the years...stuff that is total bunk. Dr. Bob tolerates it, while "moderating" anyone with strong opinions on anything or anyone who actually knows what they are talking about.

Dr. Bob should be ashamed of his board here...its run like a mental ward...total micromanagement and an "institutional" mentality applied to the Internet.

If you hate it so much here then why do you stay and continue to post? Why bother at all?

LostBoyinNC,
Thank you for the elaboration. I now have a better understanding of your concerns.
