Cutting down Remeron...what is going on?

Posted by hansi555 on November 13, 2008, at 9:00:58

Hi

I am in the proces of starting up Nortriptyline (now 35 mg) and at the same cutting down my Remeron dosage - cut from 30 to 25 mg 5 days ago, 4 weeks ago it was 35 mg.
I am also on 20 mg Lexapro (unchanged)

I am cutting down as I am becoming increasingly tired due to the Nortiptyline.

But the past few days has been "strange" - dont know if am sad or happy, also feeling somewhat dizzy and calmless.

Is this a normal reaction to the reduced dosage?
Should I lower the dosage more slowly?

I have been as high as 60 mg of Remeron (no other drug at the time).

What makes you think that what you are going through is from the decrease in Remeron? It could be from the increase (start up) of Nortriptyline.

I think it's normal to feel the way you do (dizziness etc) while changing over meds. You are doing a lot at once - decreasing one and adding another. Usually you should only do once thing at a time, that way you will know what is causing the problem.

I was always just switched although my doses weren't that high. Have you asked your pdoc if maybe a slower transition might be better for you? Phillipa

I don't recommend this for others, but I recently cold-turkeyed off Remeron after being on 30-60 mg for a year. I switched to a low dose of Zyprexa and am feeling much better. The Remeron was exacerbating my anxiety and panic to the point where I was writing suicide notes. No more AD's for me!

Okay maybe I wasnt clear, I have been on 25 mg of Nort for 5 weeks, then 6 days ago I went to 35 mg and at the same time from 30 to 25 mg remeron.

well, coming monday I will have blood tests taken for both Nortriptyline dosage and also to see if some hormones are missing (as suggested on another thread earlier) to make sure there is no underlying problem.

I guess I will try to get off the remeron and stick to some kind of combo w. Nortrip and Lexapro.

Since starting Nort many of my melancholic features hace disappeared, but I am increasingly tired also.

I am trying to work at 70% time/effort (sales engineer) but I keep falling down these holes every other 2 week.
Wondering if taking a leave for 3 months would help...? Cannot tell if depression is like this no matter what you do or if I am doing something wrong.

But the thought of being home all day, hmm, I really dont know if that would be a help.

if i remember right, remeron is one of those meds where lower doses come with more side effects. lower doses cause more sedation, more increased appetite... it could be that your tiredness is caused by the lower dose and that your lack of affect is a more traditional side effect of lowering an AD. just a thought,
