I know you had problems with spont. hypertensive crisis on parnate. Did you ever find a solution? If so what are you doing.

Hi Bulldog,

Saw PDoc today and d/c'd the Nifedipine. I don't recommend that med btw unless for one time antidote. I took it for 11 days, not fun.

Anyway, he thought my med sensitivity could have caused the 3 hypertensives in a row. i've been low/normal BP last 11 days. Someone on the board did mention that can be a transient condition as your body adjusts.

So, in answer to your question, I'm back on Parnate, 30mg day as before, now I need to have antidote with me, no biggie, and I have to follow the old food restricts for a while, bummer!!! Small price to pay for possible remission. I'll eat spinach all day if thats what it takes. Really.

I'm confused. Won't you have to follow the food restrictions for as long as you are on the med.?

Hi gg!

I've always had to follow the food restrictions, but like everyone else (I assume) on MAOI'S I was following the newer restriction list. Many restrictions on the old list were found to have minute amounts, if any, tyrasine/tyramine.

The newer list you can have chocolate, coffee, beer, wine, lots more (good) stuff! But not me, boo hoo. PDoc said to be on safe side with my history I have to follow the ancient, barbaric list. Which I will happily do if it moves me even an inch closer to wellness!

Besides, a diet without all the junk I'm thinking will augment my A/D nicely :^)

Hope you are well,

~Jade

gg, just in case I wasn't clear, yes, I will ALWAYS have to follow the diet. What I meant was, PDoc said if no hypertensive stuff for while, I could maybe switch back to newer food list.~Jade

But he did recommend spinach to augment the parnate? Also glad that you could stay on the parnate.

Hi D/R,

We were joking about starting a thread, you know, spinach new augmentation for Parnate. But you know what I think would be an EXCELLENT THREAD? "Miracle" Foods. Especially for people on MAOI's who are on limited diet (I'm currently on the old diet :( But really, I bet a lot of us eat junk diets that sabatoge exactly what were trying to do. If people had a list of the "miracle" foods for health and well being and why they are?

What do you think, people in the know (which I'm not) could post, or If you know a lot you could make list of top "miracle" foods. Could we get that on the med board, as augment to meds? Anyone can go online or pick up a book, but I bet it would be taken more seriously by a member who's been here a while, hint, hint?

Well honestly i think there are no particular miracle foods - just eating a well balanced diet with minimum of industrial food. There are so many micronutrients in food even beyond vitamins & minerals, and each food has its own unique mix. WE have only identified a few chemicals (EGCG, lycopene, folates, phosphatydylcholine, trimethylglycine, yada yada yada) that i don't think we know yet which are the best foods, and really the mix of a variety probably is synergistic. So getting 8-10 servings of fruit and vegetables, bit of whole grain and some lean meat, nuts/olive oil/eggs/legumes, yoghurt, tea, wine, etc.

I think the biggest thing is just not eating industrial food like cheese puffs and cola. Calories from junk mean you miss out on calories from real food, which has nutrients.

Personally the hard thing for me is when i'm depressed i just lose the energy to cook, which makes it more tempting to just buy a big box of cinnamon toast crunch and eat that for breakfust, lunch, dinner, and snack.

The only thing i really miss on the MAOI diet is all those soy-based asian sauces. stir fry is my fav....

Haha, I just got finished with a week of eating Reece's Puffs and Kelloggs Corn Flakes (I figured they balanced each other out). Could not eat anything else during that Parnate/Nifedipine thing.

And by the way, are you torturing me on purpose? I'm on the "old Diet" as per PDoc, no nuts, bananas (how I miss those peels), no wine, yogurt, or tea. Cheese puffs and Cola are def off the list.

I'll try to stay out of the ceareal isle and make friends with the produce section. Thanks!

Hi D/R,

Ago what? I'm putting that on my list of possible augments to go with Parnate. Might have to do a little research. And a little traveling.
