Remeron just for insomnia only?

Posted by socialphobic on October 28, 2008, at 8:59:10

It seems that I have built up quite a tolerance to the benzo's, so i'm wondering if its safe to take remeron instead on an "as needed basis" - maybe a few times a week.

Does anyone else do this? If so what dose is best just for insomnia? Would 7.5mg be too much?

Also is 7.5mg more sedating than 15mg? I've heard mixed results.

If so, then would 3.75mg also be more sedating than 7.5mg?

I guess I don't react to meds like others as 15mg didn't sedate me. Phillipa

If you can get hold of some, have you considered Promazine? I have heard that it's not available in America - don't know where you're from, so you may not be able to get it prescribed!

I take it on an 'as needed' basis for insomnia. You can go with a relatively low dose of around 50mg before bedtime.

As with other older antipsychotics, long-term use can lead to tardive dyskinesia (you may need to research it a bit before trying it). Also, Promazine does tend to give you a hang-over the day after (adjusting the dose may help in preventing this)!

Good luck!

I took mirtazapine (cheap generic Remeron) for insomnia with no problems. A dose of 7.5 mg did the trick - I split the 15 mg tabs.

Did you try 7.5 mg? Sometimes less is more with Remeron.
