Differnce between Dysthymia and Depression and Tx

Posted by Phillipa on October 30, 2008, at 13:38:25

Well it's been suggested that I have dysthymia vs depression. So what is the treatment for it. I do have a number of the symtoms as was a loner as a child and never happy except in bursts and always some minor type of anxiety til turned into panic at age 24 and now is just blah. Phillipa

It's more of a chronic low grade depression that just lingers.

Hi Phillipa, I've experienced both, dysthmia on and off for many years, and now atypical depression for two solid years. My feeling, having experienced both, is that you would KNOW if you were depressed.

Btw, I'm new and have enjoyed your posts for a long time! You are very kind to all. Therefore, I will not hold it against you that I havent received my welcome basket...

Best to you, Jade

Double depression is episodes of major depression with dysthymia between episodes. Generally the major depression responds to antidepressants, but not a complete remission, leaving residual symptoms--dysthymia. It's also possible to have dysthymia without major depressive episodes.

Hi Azalea,
After all the lurking I've done here I should know that! Thanks for the info. This 2 year trd/atyp depression is a first for me, it makes all the dysthymia I've had over the years look like a day in the park. I'm not making light of ANYONE's Dysthmia. A couple of years ago I thought I was depressed. I was wrong.

Phillipa, I sent you a lenthy post re: my treatments with dysthmia, and the MAOI's I'm trying for this unrelenting depression (very different). It disappeared (the post). Its frustrating to be a newbie! I'll try to find it, I was hoping the specifics would be of help. Jade

Jade sent you a babblemail and welcome to babble. Sounds like you have a lot to offer. I bet you forgot to hit submit and if so then I think it's gone your post that is. Frustrating to say the least. Will be looking forward to hearing about your experience and feeling about the differences. Love Phillipa and welcome again.!!!!

My post or my mind haha. Lets see if I'm more competent with the babblemail than I am at keeping track of my posts! I do have some ideas I wanted to run by you. Thanks for the warm welcome!
